Did you say Tusayan?

Yes - I did. Tusayan is a wonderful community that rests just outside of the Grand Canyon South Rim Entrance Station. It is surrounded by the Grand Canyon National Park and the Kaibab National Forrest. Tusayan is not Tucson they are over 300 miles apart and very different.

So how did Tusayan (Hopi word) develop you ask? In the early 1930's RP (Bob) Thurston bought the only private land available around the Grand Canyon and moved his family there. His wife, Bess, bought property adjacent to his which is now where the Grand Canyon National Park Airport Stands. Prior to the move RP lived in Williams and owned a service station, garage, car dealership and hotel. RP was also the Mayor of Williams and was "framed for bootlegging" - he served 6 months in Prescott county jail - all the while maintaining his position as Mayor. He was then re-elected in 1932.

The first businesses in Tusayan opened in 1956-1957 and consisted of a Shell Station and the Tusayan Steak House. In 1964 the construction of Red Feather Lodge was complete and RP's son Bill and his wife Bonnie came to the area to operate. This was the first lodge located outside of the Grand Canyon National Park. Bonnie and Bill had three children John, Bess and Clarinda - who are still involved in local businesses today.

Marathon note...The original dirt road from Williams to the Grand Canyon followed the railroad tracks - Your Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon course will weave in and out of the railroad tracks. Later RP convinced the state to put Highway 64 right down the center of his property line giving him business fronts on both sides of the highway.
