Proud of her hometown

Regennitter enjoys being close to family

By Lindsey Giardino

Megan Regennitter is a hometown girl.

She grew up in Norwalk on East 17th Street and graduated from Norwalk High School in 2008. She left for college before moving back home with her folks while she attended law school at Drake University from 2012 to 2015.
After graduating law school, she and her husband, Cody, lived briefly in Peoria, Illinois, and Davenport. Then in 2019, they decided it was time to return to central Iowa.

During their home search, the Regennitters looked in a variety of Des Moines suburbs. Ultimately, though, her hometown seemed like the best fit.

“Despite widening our search, Norwalk just ticked all the boxes,” she says. “We were close to our jobs, had plenty of room to grow, and we had plenty of amenities in town, while being close to all the perks of other Des Moines neighborhoods.”

On the first Fourth of July holiday, troops in Manhattan celebrated the news by running down Broadway, discharging guns and toppling, then decapitating, a statue of King George.

Though the Fourth was not declared an official holiday till the 1930s, George Washington insisted on celebrations to commemorate it with fireworks.

Abraham Lincoln celebrated the Fourth by moving his family into the Old Soldiers Home, visiting the wounded and inspecting troops.

Fourth of July barbecues did not become popular until the Weber Company of Chicago turned all its attention to producing their iconic dome shaped grills with ventilated lids in the 1950s. Before then, coals or wood died before they cooked much, and backyard brick ovens were expensive.
