Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I enjoyed the reminder of the 1775 American Revolution in the Daily Umbrella (American Revolution Begins, April 19, 2023). Since Iowa would not become a state until 1846 (or 70 years after the start of the American Revolutionary War), most Iowans don't see a connection between the two. Your readers might be surprised to know that there are at least 42 Revolutionary War veterans buried in Iowa, including the only known veteran of color (Cato Mead) buried west of the Mississippi. Also the logo of the Iowa National Guard is a Minute Man. A plaque of all the names can be seen at the Fort Des Moines Museum and a monument to all of them is on the Iowa State Capitol grounds.” - Mike

As always, thank you for these historic reminders, Mike. - Shane

“Hey, Shane. A real trendsetter in music with a very distinctive voice would be Frankie Valli, who sang with the Four Seasons (Distinct musical voices, April 19, 2023).” - Sharon

Yes, and grease is the word. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. Two voices immediately came to mind (even though I'm an old hippie, and my preferred genre is rock ). Ethel Merman and Simon Estes (Distinct musical voices, April 19, 2023).” - Deb

Well, I don’t think of hippies when I hear songs of Ethel Merman or Simon Estes, but they both do certainly have distinct voices. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. Willie Nelson, Reba, Mama Cass, Janis Joplin and the incomparable Roger Whittaker (Distinct musical voices, April 19, 2023). Have a rhythmical day.” - John

Rhythm is gonna get you. - Shane

“Shane, thanks for Wednesday’s piece on immediately recognizable singers in the Daily Umbrella (Distinct musical voices, April 19, 2023). I especially appreciated the recognition of Johnny Cash’s rendition of ‘Hurt.’ Still get a lump in my throat when I hear that song, and the video is even more moving! I would suggest an addition to your list. Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane was a force of nature. You can find a YouTube posting of only her vocal track of the song ‘White Rabbit.’ It’s a great listen!’ - Wayne

Great points and a great addition to the list. Thanks, Wayne. - Shane

“How about Bob Dylan? I love ‘Every Grain of Sand.’ (Distinct musical voices, April 19, 2023) Glad you mentioned Cash and his rendition of ‘Hurt.’ Between that one and ‘The Man Comes Around,’ we can tell Johnny was dealing with his mortality big time near the end.” - Brad

Totally with you on Cash. Totally not with you on Dylan. The only recognizable sound of Dylan, for me, is that I can’t understand anything he is singing. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thank for reading.

Quilt exhibit highlights mental health

Display in Delirium Gallery spreads awareness

By Lindsey Giardino

May is the official Mental Health Awareness Month.

To help increase mental health awareness and wellbeing in the community, Cora Ritter, a mental health therapist with Urbandale-based Real Connections Counseling, has partnered with The Delirium Gallery in Winterset, where she’ll display her art quilts that incorporate mental health themes and diagnoses.

Cora’s therapeutic art quilt exhibit is titled “Outside, Looking In.” The exhibit  runs through Saturday, June 3, during this year’s Quilt Festival held by the Iowa Quilt Museum.

The idea for the exhibit formed during Cora’s discussion with Easton Anderson and Jess Anderson at Delirium about creativity and wellness practices.
