I like professional football. To be more specific, I like to watch the Minnesota Vikings play. Unfortunately, they don’t play much this time of year. That’s OK, as I am not a rabid Vikings fan. No Vikings tattoos. No Vikings personalized license plates. No Vikings team jerseys. My life doesn’t change much if the Vikings win or lose, and that’s just fine by me.
Like many of you, I watched the Super Bowl on Sunday. I did not watch the hours of pre-game shows, but I did watch the game — and it was a fun one. I didn't really care who won when the game started, but I found myself rooting for the San Francisco 49ers as the minutes ticked down. I questioned myself as to why.
Was it because the 49ers were the underdogs of the game, and I tend to support the ones with that storyline? Was it because of the 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy and his connection with Iowa State University? Was it because of the 49ers tight end George Kittle and his ties with the University of Iowa football? Was it because of my respect for Joe Montana and the glory days of the San Francisco franchise, which won four Super Bowl championships in the 1980s and another in 1994?
The answer to each of those four questions is a clear “maybe,” but I eventually determined why I was rooting for the 49ers, and it had nothing to do with the team, the players or the history. It had everything to do with the media overload I had been force-fed on the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, hold tight, Chiefs fans. I greatly respect the team and its coaches and the talent of the players. They are clearly a phenomenal football team and have built a dynasty that deserves the accolades, but I have seen enough of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift on seemingly every TV channel and every social media app and every website and every newspaper and every magazine. They are like mustard on a sandwich. A little goes a long way, and too much makes me have to push the plate away.
As a Midwesterner, I should be cheering for the Chiefs, and, in many games, I have and I will continue to. I simply wish the Chiefs — and many NFL players — would follow the lead of Brock Purdy, Kirk Cousins and some others, step out of the limelight and enjoy a slice of humble pie — without the mustard.

The National Chicken Council estimates that 1.45 billion chicken wings were consumed in the U.S. on Super Bowl Sunday. Charles Passy wrote in the Wall Street Journal that wings are not necessarily a profit driver in restaurants because wholesale costs are high and wings often keep people from ordering an entrée. Chili’s added wings to their menu last year just before football season and now has de-emphasized them on menus to discourage that. Restaurants are pairing wings with low cost items like fries or mac & cheese to justify higher prices.
Restaurant Business Magazine reported that a new bill in the Alabama legislature would require restaurants to disclose the countries of origin for all seafood that's sold, along with whether it was wild-caught or farmed.
