“Thank you for that lovely story. It made me tear up (Giggling with Grandpa, Sept. 6, 2023).” - Lori
You are welcome. But it was supposed to make you giggle. - Shane
“I can remember the phone call I received on Easter morning advising me that my father had passed away from a heart attack in Florida (Giggling with Grandpa, Sept. 6, 2023). How could that be? Living in WDM at the time, we had plans for that day. Being a Sunday, we continued those plans but all the while I was thinking back to memories of my father and ahead to arrangements that had to be made. It was an unusual time. However, Easter now has an even more special meaning. It’s the day I celebrate two people moving on to heaven.” - Chuck
Keep smiling, Chuck. And keep enjoying Easter, too. - Shane
“Shane, I read two emails to start every day: The Daily Reflection from Dynamic Catholic and The Daily Umbrella. Both make me think. They often take me back to either my childhood or my early years, just after college getting started on my own. Also, I tend to forward your stories once or twice a week to someone I feel it relates to or could benefit from reading and processing. I just finished the book ‘The Rocking Chair Prophet’ by Mathew Kelly. High praise to you, as you help my mind’s eye smile and ponder in a similar way. Life is about ‘becoming the best version of yourself.’ The story of the soldier going back to his friend was exactly what he was meant to do (Thank you for being a friend, Sept. 7, 2023). I would have enjoyed hearing the story directly from Father Ray Higgins. Take care and thank you for your work.” - Jason
I am honored that we are on your reading list, and I appreciate your passing our work along to others. - Shane
“On Jan. 6, 2021, more than 2,000 rioters entered our capitol, many of whom vandalized and looted parts of it, assaulted Capitol Police officers and reporters, and attempted to locate lawmakers to capture and harm (Law and order, Sept. 12, 2023). But not for the brave efforts by law enforcement, prosecutors and the courts, this event could have collapsed our democratic system of government. Law and order are a bedrock of our society; without it we have chaos.” - Paul
I wholeheartedly agree, and we should also apply those same rules and consequences to those who vandalize private buildings, steal from individuals or businesses, overturn police cars and assault our law enforcement officers in any way. - Shane
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Mikonos is joining the brave new world of dairy-free cheese spreads. They will use almond butter. It will be available early 2024.
Also coming in early 2024, Gatorade joins the "functional water" category. If you thought that water was already pretty functional, since we can't live long without it, well it's got a new definition. It now means what we used to call "enhanced" with added vitamins and other things that add value and increase prices.
801 Chophouse (801 Grand Ave., Des Moines) has a really good bargain "Sunday Supper." I tried it last week, and a prime rib dinner with two sides, a salad and a dessert was half the price it would cost on other evenings.

Personalities | | Put me in, coach
An influence on and off the field
By Chantel Boyd
Casey Zarr says he was proud to call Brad Hamilton both coach and uncle.
"My coach, Brad Hamilton, helped me with baseball and every aspect of life,” he says. "My uncle was the varsity baseball coach at Bondurant for around 20 years with over 300 wins."
Zarr says those wins did not come easily over the years and refers to his uncle and coach as a “players' coach.”
"He's there for the players, and that's the mentality he has instilled in me as I venture on my coaching journey,” he says.
Now Zarr is applying what he learned from Hamilton to his coaching.
