Grand Canyon NPS - Water Conservation

Grand Canyon News Release For Immediate Release

Aug. 29, 2019 Lily Daniels, 928-638-7958

Grand Canyon, AZ- Grand Canyon National Park is initiating water conservation measures on the North and South Rims on Aug. 30, 2019, due to a water pipeline break that occurred on Aug. 29 on a section of the pipeline north of Phantom Ranch, along the North Kaibab trail. Until park staff repairs the break, the park will remain in conservation mode.

Crews have begun repair work to the pipeline and anticipate that it may take four or more days to repair the break.

Visitor facilities at both rims will remain open with water limitations for some services.

Water conservation measures in effect are:

No car or bus washing

No watering of lawns or plants

Using low water cleaning techniques and reduction of toilet flushing

Drinking water at restaurants will be provided by request and not automatically provided

Reduction of shower times and turning water off while brushing teeth

Water services at the Manzanita day use area and Cottonwood Campground along the North Kaibab trail, and water stations on the delta and at Bright Angel Campground near Phantom Ranch will be unavailable.

Drinking water is available at the following locations: Mile and a Half, Three Mile, and Indian Garden on the Bright Angel Trail and Supai Tunnel on the North Kaibab Trail. Partial water services will be available at the Phantom Ranch Canteen.

Hikers in the backcountry should plan to carry all their water or methods to treat water. Visit for more hiking information.

The public can call 928-638-7688 to listen to a recorded message with updates and additional information about current water restrictions at Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon National Park has a large and complex water utility system that provides water to more than 6 million annual visitors in addition to the 2,500 residents that live in the park.

Project Hero

I am excited to share with you information on a new program we are trying to bring to the Grand Canyon.  Nationwide Project Hero has assisted over 10,000 Veteran's and First Responders through a cycling-based program.  Sean Hankison will be bringing a group up to ride in our Bike your Park Event on Saturday September 28th. Sean has been working with the Grand Canyon Chamber and local businesses by helping to place Veteran's in jobs here. He recently created a Project Hero hub in Prescott Arizona and would like to do the same here.  He is looking for a Veteran or First Responder that enjoys cycling to help him organize a local hub.  If you are interested please contact Sean 928-445-4860 ext 6839.

Grand Canyon Conservancy seeking host families: The 2019 Celebration of Art is approaching and we are looking for host families for our artists. Hosting an artist is an excellent opportunity for community members to meet individuals from all over the country who appreciate the canyon as we do. Living with a host family during the Celebration of Art is preferred by some artists as they enjoy spending time with those of us that live at Grand Canyon.

Hosted each year by the Grand Canyon Conservancy, the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art is an annual event that includes 6 days of art-related events followed by a 4-month long exhibition in Kolb Studio on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

The Celebration of Art features 25 artists from around the country who engage in a plein air competition and exhibition. Park visitors have the opportunity to watch the artists paint as they seek to represent the shifting light and shadow, amazing landforms, and vibrant colors of this vast landscape.

Proceeds from this event will support the goal of funding an art venue at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This permanent home will ensure that future generations of park visitors will be able to view the stunning art collection in the Grand Canyon National Park Museum and Grand Canyon Conservancy Collections.

The plein air painters will need accommodations from September 6th-15th in order to participate in the event. Artists are typically out of the home before sunrise and gone for the bulk of the day, busy painting the canyon, they may return around lunchtime and after sunset. Hosts are not obliged to provide dinner but may do so if they wish. If you have a spare bedroom and would like to volunteer to be a host, you will be rewarded with the experience of a lifetime. Thank you for your consideration.

Grand Canyon Conservancy

SNAP Program - Do you need help buying food?

We have been working hard to bring a SNAP program to the Grand Canyon area. We hope to have more information soon but if you want to see if you may qualify see below.

Your household must meet certain requirements to be eligible for SNAP and receive benefits. If your State agency determines that you are eligible to receive SNAP benefits, you will receive benefits back to the date you submitted your application.

To see if you might be eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, visit our pre-screening tool.

Note: The FNS SNAP pre-screening eligibility tool is an interactive site with general information about eligibility requirements and how benefits are determined. Sharing your information in that form does not mean you filed an application for benefits. You will still need to submit an application through your State SNAP agency or local SNAP office.
