Good morning to you!
Friday, Nov. 6, 2026

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“How about, ‘Eat the food, Tina’ (Movie quotes, Nov. 2, 2026)?” - Tammy

Some movies just make me uncomfortable, and I am not sure why. “Napolean Dynamite” is at the top of that list. - Shane

“Don’t forget, ‘As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly’ (Movie quotes, Nov. 2, 2026).” - Rex

It’s not a movie, but “WKRP In Cincinnati” was a classic TV show, and that is a classic line. -Shane

“My No. 2 (Movie quotes, Nov. 2, 2026) is from ‘Gone with the Wind’ — ‘After all, tomorrow is another day.’ That is only because you already listed my No. 1: ‘Nobody puts baby in a corner.’ ” - Diane

“Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.” Just kidding. Thanks for the note, Diane. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. My last job before retiring was as a dispatcher for the ISP at Des Moines, Joint Forces HQ (Movie quotes, Nov. 2, 2026). My philosophy was the line in ‘A Few Good Men’ from Demi Moore as to why she cared about the Marines accused with the killing of their fellow Marine: ‘Because they say, nothing is going to hurt you, not during my watch.’ ” - John

Good movie. Great quote. - Shane

“Hawkeye Pierce in ‘M*A*S*H’ said, ‘War is war, and hell is hell. And war is worse.’ (Movie quotes, Nov. 2, 2026).” - John

We should certainly strive to never be in either. - Shane

“ ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ is probably my favorite movie of all time (Movie quotes, Nov. 2, 2026). So many one-liners in that movie, it is hard to pick only one. I typically quote that movie multiple times per day during the holiday season, and someone always replies with another quote from that movie. How about this one: ‘Oh, Eddie, if I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am now.’ As always, thank you for your thought-provoking columns.” - Kris

“Clark, that’s the gift that keeps on giving the whole year.” - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

The newly named Bill Northey Legacy Award, formerly the Ambassador’s Circle Award, recognizes external stakeholders to National Association of State Departments of Agriculture "who have provided exemplary dedication to advancing the NASDA mission." This year’s award was given to Dave Flakne, Head of State Affairs for Syngenta. Dave "demonstrated an unwavering dedication to agriculture, working to strengthen the industry through collaboration, thoughtful advocacy and strong relationships with agricultural leaders across the country."

Losers
Wallet Hub released its 2026-27 stats for obesity and overweight people. Jackson, Mississippi, is number one. Memphis is tops for "unhealthy consequences of obesity." The top 19 fattest cities were all in the South. Fort Wayne is the fattest city not in the South. Des Moines is the 41st fattest city in America, and number eight fattest in the Midwest. That's better than our rank in other studies.

More likely, almost certainly, it was the hiring of Head Coach Mahmoud Abdelfattah. After 10 straight losing seasons, Abdelfattah led the Wolves to a 21-15 record in the regular season and an 8-6 record in the Showcase Cup. ...
