Good morning to you!
Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026

My dad and I had a Friday-night routine in the latter 1970s. We would do a little grocery shopping, have supper together and play a game of Canasta. Then, he would fire up some popcorn on the stovetop. Once we filled our popcorn bowls, we would settle into the living room for entertainment on the small screen.

I would push the power button on the console television, he would kick back in his recliner, and we would watch “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Love Boat.” At least, that was the plan. More often than not, Dad would drift off, leaving me with Dr. David Banner and Captain Stubing while he enjoyed a little shut-eye.

I thought nothing of it at the time. Dad was just relaxing in his recliner after another week of hard work, and he deserved it. I had no idea he was preparing me for my own future.

The recliner found its footing in the early 20th century. In 1927, cousins Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker developed a chair that eventually became the foundation for the La-Z-Boy brand. Their invention helped transform the idea of putting our feet up.

By the 1950s and 1960s, the combination of a comfortable chair and a television set was practically a national institution. Recliner sales surged again when manufacturers introduced rocking models and other improvements.

Over the decades, recliners have evolved from oversized, bulky furniture into sleek leather chairs with power controls, adjustable headrests, USB ports and enough buttons to launch a small spacecraft. Some even offer massage and heating features. Seriously.

Jolene and I got our first taste of recliner ownership a few decades ago when we inherited two gold-colored chairs from her parents. They served a purpose, but they were relegated to the basement. They were comfortable, certainly, but they were not exactly the furniture you would feature in a decorating magazine.

Things have changed. In recent years, we purchased a matching pair of leather recliners. We affectionately call them our “Ma” and “Pa” chairs. We don’t watch TV very often, but when we do, they are our preferred places to settle in after a busy day and put our feet up.

I have found something reassuring about having a chair that seems designed specifically for me. The only problem, as Jolene points out, is that it also seems designed to make me start snoring. These days, I can turn on Netflix on a Friday night, get comfortable in my recliner and watch the opening minutes of a show. The next thing I know, I am waking up to a firm directive to go to bed. Sound familiar?

I have to wonder if owning matching recliners called “Ma” and “Pa” is a sign of getting older. It probably is. But if you want to discuss this further with me, you will need to seek me out in my recliner before I doze off, as I am determined to continue the family tradition.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Tuesday Touts

George Formaro (Centro, Gateway, Zombie Burger, South Union) is working on a history of British fish and chips, particularly its batters, through time. This is his recipe at Gateway Market Cafe. Price at $12.99, it is served every day, not just on Fridays. Battered, fried fish was introduced to England in the 16th and 17th centuries by Sephardic Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution in Spain and Portugal. Charles Dickens mentioned fish and chips in 1837 in "Oliver Twist." The batter recipes have changed, the persecution of Jews has not.

A pint with a purpose
Local blood donors roll up their sleeves to help save lives.

By Jackie Wilson

A single blood donation takes only a short amount of time, but its impact can last much longer. Across generations, families and individuals continue to donate blood because they know their contribution could help someone they may never meet. It could even save a life. For some local donors, that simple act has become a lasting commitment to helping others.

A blood donation with double benefits
When Steve Halterman first began donating blood, it was recommended as a way to address a health concern. He soon realized his blood donation could serve another purpose: helping others.

Halterman visited his health care professional for a routine physical, and a blood test showed his ferritin level was too high. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron. Elevated ferritin levels can mean too much stored iron or can be a sign of inflammation or another condition. ...
