Good morning to you!

Autumn in Iowa offers something truly magical. The trees save their best wardrobe for last, showing off brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow and gold before surrendering to winter. Everyday drives become scenic tours, backyards become paintings, and leaf-covered sidewalks become reminders that Mother Nature certainly knows how to make an exit.

Of course, autumn also means raking. Lots of raking. I often wonder how a tree that looked full yesterday can manage to dump 36 million leaves on my lawn overnight. But, there is a beauty in those falling leaves that goes far beyond the colors.

As the leaves loosen their grip on the branches, they remind us that sometimes we need to let go, too. We hold on to old grudges, disappointments, worries and things that happened years ago. We replay conversations, regret decisions and carry burdens that no longer serve us. We hang on because letting go feels like we may be losing something.

Yet, the trees show us that letting go can be beautiful. The leaves don’t cling forever. They release their hold, trusting the wind to take them wherever it goes.

There is a deeper and more sobering comparison here, too. Like those leaves, our lives are temporary. We arrive, grow, change and eventually leave this world. We spend so much time trying to control what happens along the way that we sometimes forget to appreciate the journey.

I find comfort in watching a leaf detach from a branch and dance through the air. It twists, tumbles, rises and falls. For a brief moment, it seems less like something dying and more like something celebrating.

I hope when it is our time to go that we can dance in the wind like the falling leaves do. I hope we can release our grip on this world with gratitude for the time we had, the people we loved, the laughter we shared and the memories we leave behind. I hope we can face the inevitable with a little grace, a little courage and maybe even a little smile.

That’s a wonderful thought to ponder while walking through a neighborhood ablaze with autumn colors. It is also a thought that can be interrupted rather abruptly by a sneeze. Because, for all its beauty, autumn has a frustrating side. The same season that gives us breathtaking scenery also delivers ragweed, mold spores and airborne irritants that turn us into walking tissue dispensers. My eyes water. My nose runs. My sneezes frighten squirrels out of the trees I am admiring.

Contemplating the mysteries of life can be challenging when I am searching for an antihistamine.

Still, I wouldn’t trade autumn. Its beauty, its lessons and even its irritating little reminders that we are not in charge of everything make it special.

So, take a moment today to enjoy the fall colors. Forgive someone. Release a worry. Appreciate the people beside you. And when a leaf lets go and dances past your face, take a moment to watch it. Just keep a tissue handy.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

In just four days, more people cast a ballot than the previous midterm election year's record, and there's still two more days to go. In 2022, the last midterm race, 10,357 people voted early at satellite locations in Polk County.  FROM AROUND THE WORLD: Netanyahu’s legacy is on the line as Israelis vote in the first elections since the Oct. 7 attack. When Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, it looked like Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ’s days in office were numbered. With the country overwhelmed by grief and anger after the deadliest security breakdown in its history, his resignation seemed like a matter of time. But the divisive veteran Israeli leader has scratched, scraped and literally battled his way back during a stormy three-year period of nonstop domestic crises and wars across the region. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: How daylight saving time changes affect you and what you can do about it. An extra hour of sleep is on the way for most Americans, though the “fall back” to standard time will bring darker afternoons, too. One tip: Try to get outside for some morning sun — it’ll help your body clock reset faster. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, which means you should set your clock back an hour before you go to bed. Standard time will last until March 14, when we will again “spring forward” with the return of daylight saving time. ... READ MORE

Italian-American Cultural Center of Iowa is holding a ribbon cutting today at the historic Butler Mansion on Fleur Drive. The $20 million project transforms the 38,000-square-foot mansion into a museum, event center, cooking classroom, cafe, best-in-nation bocce facilities, speakeasy, B&B, and market honoring Iowa's Italian-American heritage. The kitchen is equipped better than any restaurant in town, according to Tony Lemmo and George Formaro who know a thing or two about kitchens.

Mezze, a new Mediterranean spot in downtown's Temple for Performing Arts, opens today — 24 years after Iowa’s first Starbucks opened in the same spot next door to Centro.

St. Kilda is now under new ownership. The local owner group now includes James Richards, previously head of food and beverage at Hotel Fort Des Moines and Wakonda Club; Susy Gooding, strategic advisor for Revolton One Financial; and Jeff Woody, former Iowa State football player and owner of Goldfinch Athletics.

The longtime site of LJ's in Highland Park is becoming Tijuana's with tacos, burgers and shakes with a drive-thru.

A pint with a purpose
Local blood donors roll up their sleeves to help save lives.

By Rachel Harrington

A single blood donation takes only a short amount of time, but its impact can last much longer. Across generations, families and individuals continue to donate blood because they know their contribution could help someone they may never meet. It could even save a life. For some local donors, that simple act has become a lasting commitment to helping others.

Making a habit of giving blood
Dan Olson is a relatively new blood donor. He began donating about a year ago. However, he is not new to donating blood products. Before becoming a blood donor, he regularly donated plasma.

“When I started donating plasma, it was honestly for the money I could earn from doing it,” he said. “But, I also liked the thought that I was helping someone by donating it.”

Olson found out about plasma donation through an ad and decided to give it a try. As a plasma donor, Olson had to watch what he ate leading up to his donation appointments at BioLife in Ankeny. He said plasma donations took a while, too, and he regularly donated twice a week. ...

FROM CBS SPORTS: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City offense shut down in first loss. It might be a step too far to say that the Seattle Seahawks won their breakup with Kenneth Walker III, but at the very least, they made quite the statement against the Super Bowl MVP on "Sunday Night Football." The reigning champions dealt the Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season in a one-sided, 20-3 beatdown in Walker's first game back in the Pacific Northwest and entirely stifled their offense in the process. ... READ MORE
