“What’s with all this dot-com stuff?”

Those were the words my mother asked me a few decades ago when she started seeing product website addresses advertised on her television. I started to explain it to her. Then I quickly changed gears and talked about the weather.

Mom was well into her retirement years at the time. She had gone that long without a computer or the internet, and she seemed to be getting along just fine. I thought about setting her up, as I knew she would enjoy some aspects of the World Wide Web. She could look up recipes. Check the weather. Read the news. Maybe even order something without having to get in the car.

But I also knew my mother. Within 10 minutes, she would have received an email from a Nigerian prince who desperately needed her checking-account number to unlock $14 million. And guess who would get the blame? So, we stuck with playing canasta and watching the dot-com commercials on her television.

Looking back, Mom may have had the better deal. The internet I was trying to explain to her has now changed dramatically. Websites once seemed like the destination. If you wanted information, you went to a website. You typed an address into a browser, waited for the page to load and then clicked around like you were exploring a digital shopping mall. Today, fewer people are bothering with that trip.

Research from Piano found that traffic from search engines to hundreds of websites dropped 36% in 2025, while overall audience declined 9%. And there is an obvious reason. We started asking artificial intelligence instead.

Pew Research Center reported this year that 49% of U.S. adults have used an AI chatbot, up from 33% in 2024. About 44% say they have used ChatGPT. Searching for information is one of the most common reasons people use these tools.

In other words, we used to type a question into Google and receive 10 blue links. Now we type the question into AI and get an answer. Even Wikipedia is feeling the change. Its page views fell 8% in 2025 as people increasingly received information from AI systems that did not require them to visit Wikipedia itself.

This all leaves me wondering what Mom would think of this. She never understood a dot-com. She never used the internet. She never encountered artificial intelligence. And she never had to wonder whether the paragraph she just read was written by a human, a chatbot or a human who asked a chatbot to write it.

There is something refreshing about that. Mom may have missed the internet revolution, but she also missed the part where we invented a machine that can answer virtually any question — and then spend 20 minutes arguing with it because we think it got something wrong.

So, like many of you, I will keep exploring AI. But, I will also keep playing an occasional game of canasta and having conversations about the weather, because that approach might prove to be more intelligent. Thanks, Mom.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Des Moines sets new record high as temperatures approach 90. Sunday afternoon brought another round of summer-like weather in October as high temperatures soared into the upper 80s and low 90s, setting a new record high in Des Moines. The afternoon temperatures topped out at 88 degrees, which broke the old record of 86 degrees met most recently in 2024. The old record for today had actually been tied three times, the first time in 1960, then again in 1962, and finally in 2024. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Many GOP states have imposed new voting rules this year, some mirroring Trump’s midterm proposals. President Donald Trump has pushed Congress to pass a proof-of-citizenship law, signed an executive order seeking a national voter ID requirement and tried to limit mail voting through U.S. Postal Service changes. None of those moves succeeded in time to affect this year’s midterm elections. It’s a different matter in the states. ... READ MORE

White Castle now has kiosks in MSP airport. They prepare the legendary hot sliders in two minutes and dispatch them like a vending machine. One is conveniently located next to the men’s room.

Bondurant celebrated the groundbreaking of Silo Commons last week in the city's Grain District. Adjacent to the historic grain silos, the venue is designed to host entertainment and community events. The broader 25-acre Grain District redevelopment expects to attract more than $100 million in private investment, transforming the former Landus Cooperative site into a regional destination by 2027. Here's more food news from the Boomer boom city of North Scottsdale. Last week we told you how that city leads the nation in restaurants with both vegetarian and vegan menus. Now it has one with a $4,000 minimum not including tax and tips. North Scottsdale just got "The Chef’s Table at Belmont," priced at $1,000 per guest, with a four-guest minimum. That means a party of four is looking at a $4,000 check before tax and gratuity — though wine pairings, at least, are included. It is the latest endeavor of Alessandro "Alex" Stratta, a fourth-generation hotelier from the Piedmont and Las Vegas. Ironically, this project is attached to his Belmont Kitchen and Cocktails, which is better known for burgers and booze than for culinarian kudos. Stratta, with two Michelin stars and a James Beard award in his pocket, has said, "We don't want to be a Michelin starred restaurant here."

Meet Schylir Austin
A classroom of her own

By Lindsey Giardino

Schylir Austin is in her ninth year of teaching, seven of which have been spent in the fourth-grade classrooms at ADM schools. She currently teaches at Meadowview Elementary, where she has been since the school opened in 2021.

“When I was looking for a teaching position in the area, ADM caught my attention,” she said. “I loved the size of the district and the sense of community I felt from the people I met.”

It helped that Austin is originally from Waukee, so the area felt like home. She said she is fortunate to live close to her family and spend a lot of time with them, especially her nieces and nephew.

Throughout her time at ADM, one tradition in particular makes her smile: the 100th day of school. ...

FROM ESPN: Packers maul Bears, then fire back at Burden for 'quit' talk. No one on the Packers said much publicly when Bears receiver Luther Burden III noted last week that his team wanted to "beat them real bad and make them quit." That changed after Sunday's game. Veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin, who was traded to the Packers in the offseason and wasn't part of the team that collapsed at Soldier Field in last season's NFC wild-card playoff loss to Chicago, had some strong words for Burden -- even if Franklin didn't mention him by name -- after the Packers' 31-7 win over the Bears at Lambeau Field. ... READ MORE

FROM FOX SPORTS: 4 takeaways from Indiana's comeback win over Nebraska on 'Big Noon Saturday.'  They won’t speak of this one for long in Bloomington. Heart rates were up. The wind whipped. And somehow, some way, No. 7 Indiana slogged to a 20-17 win over Nebraska in a game that felt more reminiscent of the Tom Osborne era in Lincoln. The Hoosiers weren’t sharp on Saturday. The run game was non-existent. Gusty conditions befitting of the Irish coastline created problems in the passing game. ... READ MORE
