Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I just had to replace a refrigerator because the compressor croaked after 17 years (Is your refrigerator running?, Aug. 13, 2026). The repair tech identified the problem and said that the repair will cost $1,200 to $1,500, so you might as well buy a new one. So, I take a look at the website of the local appliance store and see that there are several models in my price range flagged as ‘in stock.’ I go to there and ask the salesperson to see the ‘in stock’ units. He says there is only one that is in the store’s warehouse and that the others are ‘in stock’ in a warehouse in Omaha and it will take a week or so to get one. Seeing that I have a hulk at home that I’m attempting to keep cold with dry ice, I take the one that is out back in their warehouse. The only redeeming feature of my saga is that I got the chance to evaluate everything that was in the dead fridge. I found that most of the condiments were out of date and due for replacement along with the fridge. I didn’t open the unidentified container of the mystery substance.” - Bill

I refer to those unidentified containers in the plastic tubs as “surprise boxes.” And they never seem to be a pleasant surprise. - Shane

“Shane, how about Swedish meat balls (Foods that must be hot, Aug. 17, 2026). I prefer them hot and with lots of gravy.” - Vern

You are right, Vern. Cold Swedish meat balls do not sound appetizing. And gravy should be the sixth main food group. "Bork, bork, bork!" - Shane

“Shane, very sage advice (Show up, Aug. 18, 2026). I would add showing up for volunteer opportunities is often half the battle. I don’t know how many times I have reconsidered volunteering for something at the last minute but if I just show up I often get as much or more gratification than the people or organizations I am helping. Thank you for your always thought-provoking column!” - Kris

That is exactly why so many volunteer organizations struggle. Meanwhile, people like you who do volunteer praise the experiences and are better for it. - Shane

“Truth (Show up, Aug. 18, 2026)! My sons call this one of my dad-isms: It's the start that stops most people.” - Brad

That dad-ism sure makes sense to me. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Report: Iowa Senate race now a toss-up, governor's race leans Democratic. beThe Cook Political Report has shifted Iowa's U.S. Senate race to a toss-up, reflecting a tightening contest between Republican Ashley Hinson and Democrat Josh Turek. The race was previously favored to lean Republican, but some private polling now shows Turek ahead within the margin of error. The shift comes as the Cook Political Report indicates Iowa's governor's race is leaning Democratic. Democrat Rob Sand, Iowa's state auditor and the only Democrat currently holding statewide office, is running against Republican Zach Lahn, a Belle Plaine farmer and entrepreneur. ... READ MORE

FROM WHO-TV: Friday hearing in Ashley Okland murder case to center on grand jury misconduct claims. Friday’s hearing in the Kristin Ramsey case may not be what many expected. Instead of a scheduled hearing on potentially dismissing her first-degree murder charge, the judge changed the scope of the hearing earlier this week and limited it to legal arguments. ... READ MORE

FROM WOI: Flock cameras getting flack in Iowa, some police departments suspending use. Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras have been used across the U.S. to store data on all passing cars. That data is stored for use in case it may be involved in future police investigations. But that's concerning to protestors like Heather Ryan of Altoona. "We are trying to bring attention to the absolutely overwhelming, overreaching arm of the United States government," Ryan said. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE WORLD: More than 2,300 Mexicans sent to Guatemala and Honduras as Trump ramps up third-country deportations. The United States has deported nearly 2,300 Mexicans to Guatemala this year and sent at least dozens more to Honduras, according to official data, a shift from the beginning of U.S. President Donald Trump’s second term when such transfers were minimal. Until now, Mexicans deported from the United States were sent almost exclusively back to their country by air and land. Only a handful arrived in other countries. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Nebraska’s largest school district asks police to stop using electric shock gloves on students. Omaha police agreed this week to stop carrying gloves that can deliver electric shocks to students in the halls of Nebraska’s largest public school district. The decision affecting most Omaha middle and high schools came after The Associated Press first revealed Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s plan to give officers the gloves, which are known as G.L.O.V.E.s or Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters. The devices have also been used in recent years by some jails. ... READ MORE

We are not making this up
Every day the Mississippi River pushes 86,400 dump truck loads of the Midwest’s best top soil into the Gulf's Dead Zone. Each year, 24 billion tons of soil are lost to water, fire and air. That’s about 17 tons per person. Yet, that’s not enough to make it a talking point in Iowa politics. Iowa's nitrate drinking water violations doubled in 2025 in comparison to the previous year, according to a report by the Iowa DNR.

For their 90th birthday, Oscar Meyer wieners have created the Weiner Cake, stacking 90 hot dogs in two tiers.

Iowa’s big moment in the art world

By Jim Duncan

This summer, 41 years after her murder, Ana Mendieta reached her career zenith headlining at London’s Tate Modern. That’s a top-five most-visited art museum in the world and number one for modern art. A retrospective of Mendieta’s career opened in mid-July with more than 120 works, tracing her breakout years in Iowa City through 1984. It’s the largest-ever U.K. exhibition of her work, with many pieces shown in Britain for the first time.

It is also being hailed as a striking curatorial moment: three powerhouse female artists are headlining at the Tate Modern, in London, at once, with Mendieta joining Tracey Emin (through Aug. 30) and Frida Kahlo (through Jan. 3, 2027) creating a capstone for outgoing director Maria Balshaw. ...
