“I like the poptop-and-peel options on soup cans (The electric can opener, July 30, 2026)!” - Brad

You are right once again, Brad. Some improvements have proven to be true conveniences. - Shane

“Shane, I think some of the characterizations of corporate radio here are a little misleading (Locally owned media, Aug. 4, 2026). As someone who actually works in corporate radio, I can tell you our budgets aren’t nearly as bloated as people might assume. Our marketing department consists of one full-time employee, and we don’t have an army of high-dollar consultants behind the scenes. What we do have are local employees who live here, pay taxes here, raise families here, and genuinely care about the Des Moines metro. Many of us grew up here and made the choice to stay because this is our home. Working for a company headquartered somewhere other than Des Moines doesn’t make the people working at its local stations any less invested in this community. We’re allowed to love this city, too. Stations like KFMG are incredibly important. They amplify local voices and can serve the community in ways commercial radio sometimes can’t. That’s valuable, and Des Moines is better for having them. But the tired ‘big corporate radio vs. the little local guy’ narrative doesn’t really reflect the people who actually work in radio here. The people behind these stations aren’t faceless corporations. They’re your neighbors. They shop at the same stores, drive the same streets, send their kids to local schools, support local businesses, and care about what happens here. At the end of the day, all Des Moines broadcasters are here to serve our community and provide information, companionship and entertainment whenever people need us. The folks at KFMG are wonderful stewards of their hometown, and so are the people working at Des Moines’ corporate-owned radio stations. Yes, even iHeart.” - Jeremy

We agree on the people. But if you are trying to convince me that local media is better off being owned by out-of-state corporations, we will have to agree to disagree. Meanwhile, I do appreciate your perspective. - Shane

“Great column (Parenting, Aug. 5, 2026)! That’s so true about parenting. Best job and best title ever is Mom!” - Sue

I can think of a few more — like Dad and Grandpa. - Shane

“Your column regarding refrigerators reminds me fondly of when the iceman would make his delivery to our elementary school, and he would give us ice chips to suck on in those hot, sunny days (Is your refrigerator running?, Aug. 13, 2026). We rallied around the truck like kids did later to the ice cream truck. The only thing missing was the music.” - Margaret

Being the iceman had to be the coolest job. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

The U.S. declared lungs unfit for human consumption in 1971, but ancient Romans loved to eat them. An Apicius recipe calls for soaking them in milk, straining, breaking two eggs inside them, plus a little salt, and mixing in a spoonful of honey before tying off, boiling and slicing. The taboo today is probably because lungs are filters trapping dust and other potentially toxic stuff.

Hoobastank rocks on after 30 years

By Jackie Wilson

When Hoobastank hit the music scene in the mid-1990s, one question followed them everywhere.

“Interviewers ask, why such a stupid name?” co-founder Dan Estrin said. “We never said we love that name. We never walked around thinking we’re super cool and we came up with this brilliant name. There’s no reason for it. For better or worse, it is what it is.”

Despite the unconventional name, Hoobastank has been a mainstay in the alternative rock genre since forming in 1994. Hoobastank’s No. 2 hit song on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004, “The Reason,” cemented the band’s popularity in the alternative rock genre.  ...

1619: First enslaved Africans arrive in Jamestown, setting the stage for slavery in North America. On or about Aug. 20, 1619, “20 and odd” Angolans, kidnapped by the Portuguese, arrive in the British colony of Virginia and are then bought by English colonists. The exact date is not definitively known (a letter from the time identified the ship's arrival coming in "the latter part of August"), but this date has been chosen by many to mark the arrival of the enslaved Africans in the New World—beginning two and a half centuries of slavery in North America. … READ MORE
