Good morning to you!

It was 150 years ago when the first patent was issued for the telephone, and conversations have never been the same since. You can thank — or blame — Alexander Graham Bell.

His invention changed the world by allowing voices to travel over electrical wires. I still don’t understand how that actually works, but I also don’t understand quantum mechanics, how chameleons change color or the Electoral College. To be fair, I am not losing sleep over any of those mysteries.

Like most of you, I use my phone every day. Probably more than I should. Apple is kind enough to send me a weekly report detailing exactly how much time I have spent staring at the little glowing rectangle. That makes me want to use it less. Then another week happens.

A while back, I learned how frequently our cellphones "ping" nearby towers. Those pings can paint a surprisingly accurate picture of where we have been, where we are and where we are headed. That realization inspired me to start turning my phone off once in a while. It is not because I am doing anything suspicious. I simply do not think it is anyone else's business what time I buy groceries, where I fill up with gasoline or how many laps I make around the neighborhood trying to convince myself I enjoy walking. Privacy used to be something people expected. Now it feels like a premium subscription.

That same line of thinking led me to ditch my Apple Watch a few years ago and return to an old-fashioned wind-up wristwatch. My youngest daughter, Abby, happily claimed the smartwatch. She also accidentally wore it into a swimming pool, and there is now one less tracking device in this world.

I reboot my computer every day because the experts says it helps keep things running smoothly. Why not do the same with my phone? Unless phones have “starters” that eventually wear out, it seems like a reasonable plan.

Sometimes I wonder if I should go back to the landline phone on the kitchen wall. Maybe one with one of those impossibly long cords that could stretch into three rooms while somehow wrapping itself around every chair leg along the way. My new choice may not have a rotary dial or come in avocado green, but it would let me talk to someone remarkably well without all the pings.

Perhaps that is what Alexander Graham Bell had in mind all along. He invented the telephone so people could connect with one another. He probably never imagined we would carry tiny computers that track our every move, interrupt dinner with notifications and somehow convince us that scrolling is the same thing as talking.

Maybe I really will go back to a landline. If nothing else, a 40-foot phone cord counts as exercise, and nobody ever asked a wall phone to update its software.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading (and listening).

Woebegone Wednesday
There are two sides now to the junk food saga. Beginning in the 1980s, cheap, government-subsidized high fructose corn syrup allowed companies to gradually increase the average serving size of soft drinks. Small, medium and large became large, extra large and supersized.

In the 2020s, inflation forced junk food companies to reduce sizes. This time, the changes were made surreptitiously. Burger King changed the serving size of chicken nuggets from 10 to 8 without a word. Domino's quietly clipped its ten-wing deal to eight, and not a single ad warned you. Simply Orange bottles became slimmer, disguising a 6-ounce reduction. Häagen-Dazs used to sell a 16-ounce carton in the U.S., then cut it to 14 ounces while the tub still felt familiar in your hand. Gatorade announced a "new grip" bottle to cover up a four-ounce cut, down to 28 from 32.

1799: Rosetta Stone found. Although there is some debate about the exact date, on what was likely July 15, 1799, during Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, a French soldier discovers a black basalt slab inscribed with ancient writing near the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles east of Alexandria. The irregularly shaped stone contained fragments of passages written in three different scripts: Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Egyptian demotic. The ancient Greek on the Rosetta Stone told archaeologists that it was inscribed by priests honoring the king of Egypt, Ptolemy V, in the second century B.C. More startlingly, the Greek passage announced that the three scripts were all of identical meaning. The artifact thus held the key to solving the riddle of hieroglyphics, a written language that had been “dead” for nearly 2,000 years. … READ MORE
