Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“We are in Florida November through April and Iowa May through October (Wednesday, June 24, 2026). Regardless, my indoor times are 8:30 a.m. through 6 p.m. either way. My first task in the morning is to check the weather for the day, regardless of location, to see whether I need short pants and a shirt or long pants and number of layers of upper body wear. Hats come on at 20 degrees. It is also a good time to plan daily window coverings for our east and west windows and the thermometer ranges. It happens that the longest days of sunshine for each location are close to where we are. We enjoyed cold weather to 10 degrees and snow to 6 inches the first 65 years.” - Duane

You are now entitled to enjoy any weather you so choose, Duane. I am still working toward that. - Shane

“I would much rather sweat than shiver (Wednesday, June 24, 2026). I grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa, and I had enough cold weather to last me for an entire lifetime, so I have no desire to be cold again. I was comfortable in Phoenix in July, and when I returned to Iowa I was much more uncomfortable mowing my lawn at 80 degrees and 80% humidity than I had been in Phoenix.” - George

Well, as they say: It’s not the heat; it’s the stupidity. - Shane

“You and the other commenters on the ‘four-day’ work week seem to overlook the fact that most people on four-day weeks are still working 40 hours (Mailbag, June 25, 2026). As to schools, at today’s prices, not running those buses saves a lot of diesel.” - Bill

It’s certainly worth some discussion. I am still trying to figure out who wins in a four-day week. It puts extra burden on the parents (the paying customers), and I am not convinced it is better for the student (the final product). If the only goal is to simply find a way to better recruit from a shrinking pool of teachers, well, then I guess this is the answer. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. Your memory story reminds me of 1 of 3 Man Laws (Monday, June 29, 2026). Any project that requires unscrewing or screwing in screws or bolts will be thwarted by the last screw or bolt. Using an electric cord, rope or hose on a perfectly obstacle-free lawn is guaranteed to find something to get caught on. To this particular topic, when you stand in the garage and inventory the tools you'll need for a project located at the farthest reaches of your yard, you will discover you've forgotten the one indispensable tool upon arriving at the job site. Corollary to that is your wife or child you've conned into helping you will be unable to find the tool due to your inability to create in their mind a vision of what a yellow-handled Phillips head screwdriver on the top of the screwdriver drawer looks like.” - John

Back up, John. How exactly do you get your wife or kids to help you in the garage? - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

A new report from the Common Sense Institute of Iowa projects the state will run a $1.2 billion general fund deficit during fiscal year 2027. Chain gang news

Yum brands sold off its ownership of Pizza Hut in hopes of propping up its stock, which is considered over valued. Yum earlier announced it was closing 200 Pizza Huts to focus on KFC and Taco Bell, which are considered to have more upside than the more competitive pizza sector.

OTB Hospitality, the company that operates On the Border Mexican Grill, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. According to the filing, OTB Hospitality possessed between $500,000 and $1 million in assets, and between $1 million and $10 million in liabilities. In 2024, On the Border spent more than $11.8 million on leases for underperforming locations and later closed upwards of 40 such locations including all their Arizona stores and the store in Jordan Creek Town Center in 2025. That was an original JCTC restaurant, next door to Joe's Crab Shack, which closed a year earlier.

Bonefish Grill's bang bang shrimp retained its No. 1 ranking as chain restaurants' best dish in Delish's 2026 rankings. Numbers two, three and four were all Cracker Barrel dishes: double fudge Coca Cola cake, chicken pot pie and fried apples. Texas Roadhouse's ribs were fifth.

FEATURE STORY
The living treasures of Iowa food

By Jim Duncan

Inspired by Japan’s Living National Treasures, the idea for CITYVIEW’s CHOICE awards originated 12 years ago. The Japanese program honors “preservers of important intangible cultural properties.” In the years after World War II, anxiety arose in Japan that their unique cultural traditions — noh, kabuki, origami, kumi, sumo, teapot ceramics, noodle making — might be swamped by the conquering Western culture. By honoring revered exemplars of those arts, they preserved them and made them important to a new generation.

Our intention at CITYVIEW was to do something similar for Iowa’s venerable, enduring food treasures. That evolved into a hall of fame for people and institutions that bestow a singular quality and identity on our city and state. CITYVIEW’s Hall of Iowa Culinary Excellence (CHOICE) awards began focusing on venerability — enduring traditions and pioneers. ...
