Good morning to you!

About 158 million Americans — 55% of those ages 12 and older — listen to podcasts at least once a month. More than 115,000 English-language podcasts and roughly 4.5 million podcasts are available today worldwide. Those are remarkable numbers for a medium that only debuted in 2004.

I have tried listening to podcasts, but I never found my groove. Many of my friends swear by them while driving, working out, mowing the lawn or getting ready for the day. I get the appeal. I really do. But I can barely keep up with my email, voicemail, social media and streaming services. The last thing I wanted was another app, another subscription, another username and another password. A guy has to draw the line somewhere.

Apparently, my line was drawn in disappearing ink. You can now officially count me among those 158 million podcast listeners. Better yet, I hope some of you will join me.

For years, people smarter than me kept saying the same thing: “The Daily Umbrella should be a podcast.” After hearing enough nudges, suggestions and “What are you waiting for?” comments, I finally stopped making excuses and jumped in. Headfirst.

The process has been fascinating. I use artificial intelligence to summarize each Daily Umbrella into a five-minute script. Then I edit it to make sure it reads like us. But because I have never enjoyed listening to my own voice, I use AI-generated narration that is surprisingly natural. From there, I assemble everything in iMovie and post it to YouTube. Once we get the wrinkles ironed out, the next step is to create an RSS feed so listeners can find us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Is it perfect? Not even close. Am I learning something new every day? Absolutely. That’s part of the fun.

I would appreciate it if you could give it a listen and tell me what you think. I know many of you prefer reading the full Daily Umbrella, and that’s not changing. The podcast will not replace the written version. It is simply another way to deliver local news and hopefully introduce our work to people who might never have read the text edition. Who knows? As we get better at this, podcasting may become another way we can help local businesses tell their stories as well.

Each morning, I will post a link to the latest episode in the Daily Umbrella, as I did today. Listen to it. Read it. Do both. There is no wrong answer. And the best part? You don’t need another username, another password or another thing to remember. In today's world, that alone might be worth pressing play.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading (and listening).
