Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Reading your column instantly transported me back to my great-grandmother's living room (TV trays, June 8, 2026). She had black TV trays with a floral pattern and gold legs, and I remember sitting with her, enjoying a snack while Lawrence Welk played on the television. The trays themselves weren't anything special, but the memories attached to them certainly are. If someone offered me the chance to spend one more evening with my great-grandma, a TV tray, a snack and Lawrence Welk, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Thanks for the memories!” - Lee

How many snacks were on that TV tray? I know. And a one and a two… - Shane

“I got a set of four beautiful TV trays as a wedding shower gift (TV trays, June 8, 2026). I never used them, but I kept one. It takes no space to store, but once in a while now I use it to put outside my apartment door so the restaurant can deliver my dinner onto it. I then don't have to bend down to the floor to pick up the meal. So, save yours for your old age, and it will save your old back.” - Margaret

The porch pirates have clearly not found your address yet, Margaret. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I thought you might be interested in my survey. I had foot surgery and have been watching a lot of daytime TV. After seeing commercials for drugs to help us, I decided to write down each name of what is being marketed. So far, I have counted 76 different products being advertised, and I add two to three each day! That's in about a three-week period. Most say to consult your doctor about them. After writing all these down, why is there anything wrong with anybody?” - James

Yes, James, there’s a pill for that. - Shane

“We didn't eat in front of the TV at home, but we had TV trays (TV trays, June 8, 2026). I guess it was a status symbol of the modern-day family to have them. But, I took one of those TV trays from home to my first apartment post-college and enjoyed watching TV and eating in my own apartment. That was living.” - Brad

I am salivating right now just over the thought of those steaming hot Swanson pot pies. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Nike announced on Wednesday that it is releasing the “Caitlin 1” this fall. “Coming to a logo near you,” the sportswear giant posted, a nod to Clark's penchant for taking 3-pointers from near where the logos sit at midcourt in most WNBA arenas. World Cup hospitality news

~ Wall Street Journal sent two reporters to Kansas City to find out what that city has going on to attract four World Cup teams there to train. Not just any teams either: four elite teams from four soccer-mad nations, Argentina, England, Holland and Algeria. England is training there even though they don’t have a single game scheduled there. Their entire first round is on the east coast.

Among the reasons were Kansas City’s superior soccer training facilities, four of them. But in Argentina’s case, one of the closing arguments was the area’s legendary barbecue. The world’s largest per capita consumer of beef (Argentina, not the U.S.) prefers asada and parilla cooking methods. KC barbecue is very similar.

~ Price gouging in the U.S. is blamed when looking at hotel and restaurant reservations in host cities for the World Cup. In Mexico and Canada, they are hard to find in most host cities. Not in the U.S., especially not in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta and Boston.
