Good morning to you!

My childhood swing set was made of cast iron and weighed slightly less than a Mack truck. Once Dad planted it in the ground, that thing wasn’t moving, no matter how many kids were trying to launch each other into orbit on it. I always assumed Dad built it. Mom definitely painted it — every year in the same thrilling shade of industrial gray.

The swings themselves were basic rubber seats dangling from bare chains, perfectly designed to freeze hands in the winter and pinch fingers year-around. No plastic covers. No safety harnesses. No slides, climbing walls or lookout towers. Just a simple swing set built like a Cold War bunker. And, somehow, it kept me entertained for years.

We also had a giant tree in the yard. Mom called it the “boxelder bug tree” because those creepy little bugs covered it — and everything else within a 50-yard radius. Even so, it was a fantastic climbing tree. I dreamed of building a treehouse in it, but Mom shut that idea down immediately, probably because she preferred me alive and unbroken. That was fine. My siblings, the neighborhood boys and I still spent countless hours perched on its limbs like a flock of noisy squirrels.

When I wasn’t outside risking tetanus, I was inside sprawled across the shag carpet watching cartoons. Scooby-Doo. Superman. Hong Kong Phooey. The Grape Ape. They all lived on our massive console TV, along with the commercials, which were just as entertaining — especially the Honey Comb cereal ads with the Honey Comb Hideout. I wanted a clubhouse like that more than anything. I never got one, but a neighborhood friend did, and for a couple of glorious summers, we treated it like our own little Hall of Justice.

I drove by my childhood home recently. It looks completely different now. The swing set is gone. The giant tree is gone, too. For a moment, that made me sad. Then I could suddenly see them again, and the memories made me smile.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Climbing Kites has not changed the recipe of their THC drinks. They just changed the labels to include sucrose within their cannabis extract because Minnesota passed a law requiring it, even though it is in such "trace amounts" that the USDA does not require its listing. The recipe has not changed. Climbing Kites remains an oasis in the desert of heavily sweetened cannabis beverages.

More shopping peeves. If you like single-serving-size cans of baked beans, you usually have to pay more than you would for much larger cans. So, buy the bigger cans and throw more than half the contents away.

With the rising concerns about water quality, many people are shopping for safe drinking water. A gallon costs $1.49 and up at the supermarkets I frequent. But 24 bottle cases of 16.9 ounces often cost $2.99 on sale, even $1.99 recently at HyVee. It takes less than eight bottles to make a gallon. So, even at $3.99, they are cheaper than gallon-sized jugs. So contribute 24 plastic containers to the garbage instead of one. That ought to be illegal, at least in Minnesota.

Ice Cream Days, Iowa's biggest food fest, begins today and runs through the weekend in LeMars. There will be parades, 5Ks, concerts, pony rides, lots of ice cream and much more.

Meet Brandon Schade
Addressing students’ unique learning needs

By T.K. West

After graduating from high school in 2004, Brandon Schade chased his dreams, playing in a nationally touring band for a few years. Eventually, Schade returned to the Des Moines area, where he spent 10 years working at a financial institution before realizing he needed a change. When Schade turned 35, he decided to pursue a career in education.

Schade had heard positive things about the Waukee Community School District, so he applied for a special education associate position at South Middle School. During that time, the Teach Waukee/Para-to-Teacher grant program provided Schade an opportunity to earn his teaching degree through Western Governors University. Now in his fifth year with the district, Schade is in his first year as a special education teacher after four years working as an associate and paraeducator. ...
