Good morning to you!

"He needs a few more whiskers." Those were the words an eventual boss of mine reportedly said when he first met me at age 24. He was not suggesting I grow a beard. He was suggesting I grow up. To be fair, he was right.

I thought about that recently while editing our upcoming Senior View cover story on senior musicians and why they matter. The article made me think about something we often overlook in a culture obsessed with youth: Experience still counts.

Performing music is a lot like most things in life. The more you do it, the better you get. At least that is the theory. Experience, wisdom and know-how are earned the old-fashioned way: one day at a time. But I learned long ago that simply repeating something does not guarantee improvement. If you practice a mistake over and over, you do not become an expert. You become exceptionally talented at doing it wrong. That is why I have always preferred the saying, "Perfect practice makes perfect."

Author Malcolm Gladwell popularized the idea with his "10,000-Hour Rule" in the book “Outliers.” His argument was that achieving a high level of expertise requires roughly 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. Whether the number is exactly right is beside the point. Excellence takes time, effort and repetition.

A little back-of-the-napkin math shows that someone working 40 hours a week can rack up 10,000 hours in about five years. Of course, if a portion of those hours is spent checking social media, staring out the window or wondering what is for lunch, the timeline stretches considerably.

That is one reason many musicians improve with age. They have accumulated those hours and then kept going. They have practiced scales, learned songs, played before audiences, forgotten lyrics, missed notes and recovered from all of it. Every rehearsal and every performance adds another layer of skill. More importantly, life adds depth.

When seasoned musicians perform songs about love, heartbreak, joy, loss or hope, they are not simply reciting lyrics. They are drawing from decades of real experiences. They have lived through the highs and lows the songs describe. Audiences may not be able to explain why a performance feels different, but they can usually sense the authenticity.

In a world that often celebrates the next big thing, there is still something to be said for the person with a few more whiskers. The best musicians remind us that learning never ends and that mastery is not a destination. It is a lifelong pursuit.

And sometimes, a little extra wisdom looks a lot better than a little extra facial hair.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Clyde's Fine Diner will not renew its lease. St. Kilda was also "one and done" on a lease at the same address. It is not easy to access on East Grand, especially in winter. Before this year, Clyde's and Rodina in Cedar Rapids were the only two Iowa restaurants that produced a James Beard Best Chef Midwest semifinalist in half a decade. Both restaurants are gone with the wind now. The biggest question regarding Clyde's demise is "Where's Diego (Rodriguez)?" He is a super talented chef and lots of top restaurants would love to have him aboard.

ART NEWS
Litigations and festivities

By Jim Duncan

The art world went to court this spring, a lot. In San Francisco the family of Armand Vaillancourt lost its legal fight to prevent The City from dissembling and moving his brutalist Vaillancourt Fountain from Embarcadero Plaza. San Francisco will spend $4 million to move the neglected political sculpture, labeled “one of urban America’s truly bizarre works of public art and a reminder of midcentury mistakes” by architectural critic John King.

In New York City it was leaked that Mayor Mamdani scolded King Charles of England to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India. The King’s office refused comment about the private meeting. Activists filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice demanding its return. Also in England, a Botticelli painting was placed under an export ban in an effort to keep it from going back to Italy. ...
