Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I really appreciate how you ended your column (25 years, June 4, 2026):‘And while I am proud of what has been accomplished over the past 25 years, I am even more excited about what comes next.’ I also appreciate how you kept it to accomplishments and not failures or blame as so many people do today. It is always a pleasure to read your work. (Isn't that so much better than saying I enjoy chasing down the rabbit trail with you. That's true, too.) Thank you.” - Donna

There is plenty of room in the rabbit hole. Come on down! - Shane

“Dear Shane, Jolene and staff, congratulations on this deserving anniversary (25 years, June 4, 2026). We appreciate your humor (mostly), local news and events, your caring of local businesses and students and the consistency of your publications. So happy you made the trip to Iowa. Cheers and wishes for many more years of excellent  journalism and support of Iowa communities.” - Judy

Mostly? - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. We had the TV trays and the TV dinners but no longer have them (TV trays, June 8, 2026). As I got older and my taste buds became more discriminating, I realized how the quality of the TV dinner itself — including the brownie — were palatable only to someone distracted by Soupy Sales. Today, with the open concept of the kitchen, living and dining area, we are enjoying a much more edible meal — but the content of the dinnertime news is not very palatable.” - John

I still like TV dinners — and Soupy Sales. - Shane

“I remember TV trays from my childhood (TV trays, June 8, 2026)! Last year I bought what's basically the same thing, only made of wood. I use them for my Mahjong group so everybody's got somewhere to park their snacks and drinks while we play. I love that there's a little history to it — Mahjong was a living-room thing for housewives back when TV trays first showed up in people's homes, and here we both are having a comeback. Same idea, all these years later, keeping an old game going.” - Mary

Well, I have no idea what Mahjong is, but if it involves snacks and drinks and TV trays, count me in. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Fastball finds a second wind as nostalgia fuels new popularity

By Jackie Wilson

Fastball, the alt-rock trio that helped define late-1990s radio, is enjoying an unexpected comeback, and co-founder Tony Scalzo says the band is embracing every minute of it.

“We are excited about getting this new vibe. It’s like we’re in a renaissance, more than we were 15 years ago when nobody wanted anything to do with us,” he admits. “Our tour with Barenaked Ladies and Sugar Ray changed that.” ...
