Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Ideas on how to reduce microplastic exposure (Welcome back, glass bottles, June 1, 2026): 1. Buy at thrift stores. Those clothes, etc. have been around and washed many times by now so less microplastic. 2. Buy cotton clothing. Less synthetic so less microplastic. 3. Use a reverse osmosis water system. Countertop ones cost as little as $250. There is a cost to replace filters. Put the water from that system into your glass bottles. I know you will have to look around for glass bottles.” - George

By George, I think you’ve got it! - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. I need not go any further than my left hand in which I hold my cell phone to find plastic components (Welcome back, glass bottles, June 1, 2026). I can reach with my right hand and grab either the TV remote, the control for the hospital bed I’m in, or the plastic water cup that I can suck up microplastics through its plastic straw.” - John

I hope you are home soon, John, and drinking from a glass cup. - Shane

“Greetings, Shane. I really appreciated your column today about the circle of life (Sunrise, Sunset, June 2, 2026). Truly poignant and something that every reader will likely find a personal relevance. Therein lies a core nugget of inspiration, as each of us needs to remain receptive to whatever life delivers, good and bad. Keeping our hearts, minds and souls open to these milestone life changes is what makes us better humans — and better contributors to the world.” - John

“There's far too much to take in here. More to find than can ever be found. But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky keeps great and small on the endless round.” Or so the song says. - Shane

“Lovely column (Sunrise, Sunset, June 2, 2026).” - Joe

You are still singing from “Fiddler on the Roof,” aren’t you? - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

The sun does indeed set on a British anchovy empire
When Gentleman’s Relish announced it would quit producing anchovy paste because of poor sales, the upper crust British establishment mobilized to save its favorite umami-rich condiment. Simpson’s in the Strand, a luxurious eatery in the center of London, came up with its own version; high-end department store Fortnum & Mason is selling its own a short walk away.

Begun in 1828 by English grocer John Osborn, Gentleman’s Relish blends mashed anchovy fillets, butter and a secret blend of spices and herbs. It tastes like a fishy, peppery paté, befitting the mock Latin name Osborn gave to it, Patum Peperium. James Bond creator Ian Fleming has a character munch on a Gentleman’s Relish sandwich in “For Your Eyes Only.” Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson declared it one of 10 foods she could not live without. Little 2.5-ounce pots of Gentleman’s Relish are selling for $80 on Ebay. (WSJ)

Mr. Loewinger served in the Civil War, enlisting on June 28, 1861. He was discharged a little less than a year later for what the army surgeon’s certificate called chronic diarrhea. He received his pension until his death in 1876. After his death, his widow, Johanna, applied for a widow’s pension, but was denied since her husband died from suicide by cutting his throat with a razor and not from any long-term disability caused by his military service. Johanna claimed her husband had suffered from insanity triggered by his military service and felt entitled to the benefits. … READ MORE
