Good morning to you!

My feet feel better. Fewer aches. More comfort. And I credit Pete Gorman.

Years ago, I attended industry conferences where Pete, president of what was then the largest free-paper publishing company in America, was a regular fixture. He would show up in a button-down shirt, a sport coat and ... tennis shoes. Or sneakers. Or gym shoes. Or whatever your region insists on calling them.
At the time, I found it odd. His footwear seemed wildly out of place.

The rest of us were dutifully lacing up dress shoes or slipping into loafers. There was no official dress code, but, like most things in life, there was an unwritten one. We followed it. Pete did not. While the rest of us were dressing for appearances, Pete appeared to be dressing for comfort.

Today, I understand. More often than not, tennis shoes are now part of my wardrobe. I no longer wear suits and ties, but most days I am in a collared shirt, khakis and, yes, tennis shoes.

There is a reason. As a much younger man, I fell 40 feet from a tree and landed on my feet. It caused nerve damage that still gives me trouble today. In my first job out of college, I was required to wear a suit, tie and dress shoes every day. Even the most expensive pairs I bought felt less like footwear and more like punishment.

Fortunately, times have changed. Many manufacturers now build the comfort of athletic shoes into dress shoes and even work boots. A well-dressed man wearing a suit and tennis shoes is no longer an odd sight. A few decades ago, it raised eyebrows. Today, it barely earns a second glance. In some circles, it is even considered stylish.

Pete Gorman may not have been trying to start a trend. He was probably just trying to make it through the day with comfortable feet. But long before the rest of us caught on, he had already figured something out.

So each morning when I lace up my tennis shoes, I think of Pete. My feet thank him. My back thanks him. And somewhere, I suspect Pete is smiling, knowing he won the dress-code debate decades ago.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday

This is where Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen stands now in Iowa. It's posted on the door of the Merle Hay Road store that was Iowa's first. To our mind,  Popeye's is the victim of the boneless chicken craze that raped America's taste buds. Within three blocks of this Popeye's sit Chick-fil-A, Wingstop and KFC. Only the latter even deals with bone-in bird.

I will rue the loss of Popeye's also because the Merle Hay store gave me the best quote I have heard in 40 years of food writing. The store opened after Hurricane Katrina and was staffed almost entirely with displaced Louisiana workers. My West Highlands terrier loved riding on my drivers armrest and peeking through the window at drive-in windows. One lady with gold teeth  exclaimed from her window "My, my. That be a he-dog or a she-dog?"

I responded that he was a he-dog, and she exclaimed, "If I be a she-dog, I be wanting to have his babies."
