Good morning to you!
Memorial Day weekend usually arrives with backyard burgers, sunscreen and at least one guy insisting he can still throw a football 50 yards without pulling a hamstring. But tucked between the grills and the lawn chairs is another familiar sight: the bright red Flanders poppy. It carries more history than most holiday weekends combined.

The poppy is one of the most enduring symbols honoring veterans. Each year on National Poppy Day — observed the Friday before Memorial Day — members of the American Legion Family distribute red crepe-paper poppies in exchange for donations to support veterans and military families. It may be the only flower capable of making people pause between bites of a hot dog.

As a kid, I remember my father buying one each time we saw veterans handing them out. He would pin each poppy to the sun visor in his car, where they would remain all year until replaced the next Memorial Day. For years, I never fully understood the flower’s connection to veterans. I just knew there were several in every vehicle my Dad ever owned.

The crimson bloom, formally known as the corn poppy, became a symbol of remembrance after inspiring the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields.” Canadian Lt. Col. John McCrae penned the words while serving at a field hospital during the war, forever linking the fragile flower with sacrifice, courage and loss.

The poppy’s dramatic reputation actually predates World War I by centuries. In the medieval epic “The Song of Roland,” its blood-red petals symbolized the aftermath of battle during Charlemagne’s reign. Apparently, humans have been assigning emotional baggage to flowers for a long time.

Not all poppy symbolism has been about war, though. Ancient Greeks connected the flower to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, while Romans associated it with Ceres, the goddess of agriculture. In Britain, the poppy also became linked to fertility and remembrance, which seems fitting for a flower with seeds that can lie dormant in the soil for decades before suddenly blooming again. Eighty years underground and still making a comeback? That is resiliency.

Native to Europe and Asia, corn poppies arrived in North America mixed in with imported crop seed. Before herbicides scrubbed farm fields spotless, the flowers commonly appeared among grain crops, earning the nickname “corn poppy.” Their vivid petals were once used for dyes, ink and even medicine. This flower had a side hustle long before that became fashionable.

This may all be more than you ever wanted to know about poppies, but when you soon see members of the American Legion Family handing out those red crepe-paper flowers, I hope you will consider making a donation. The poppy is more than decoration. It is a reminder to honor veterans while we enjoy the simple pleasures they helped protect: family, friends and a long weekend outdoors.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

As a child, Piffer enjoyed “playing teacher,” often setting up a makeshift classroom in her parents’ laundry room. During her college placements, she gravitated most toward working with younger students. ...
