Good morning to you!

Traveling cocktail parties. That’s what we call our summer sampling shindigs. And, this year, we are turning up the heat with three warm-weather events. These festive, flavor-packed outings invite guests 21 and older to sip their way through some of central Iowa’s most popular bars and restaurants, all within easy walking distance. Think bar crawl, but with better drinks, fewer regrets and the warm sun.

If you enjoy a good cocktail — or just enjoy pretending you know what “notes of elderflower” means — these events are for you. They are also the perfect excuse to check out new venues without waiting an hour for a table or shouting your drink order over a cover band playing 1990s hits. For years, people from all walks of life have joined us for these events. If you have not yet, consider this your official invitation to stop scrolling and start sipping.

First up is a brand-new event — and our debut in Ankeny. The Midday Mixer takes place Saturday, May 30, from 1-4 p.m. at The District at Prairie Trail. Unlike many of our Friday night events, this one lands on a Saturday afternoon for a more relaxed, leisurely stroll through one of the metro’s hottest entertainment districts.

Participating spots include El Presidente, Grimaldi’s, The Breakfast Club, Tribute, 30 Hop, Whiskey River, Magee’s Irish Pub, The Operating Room and Wasabi. Featured drinks include the Horchata Milk Punch, Patio Pineapple, Yankee Doodle, Tribute Old Fashioned, Tipsy Turtle and Sunset Sangria — plus plenty more designed to make your group chat jealous. Learn more and purchase tickets at middaymixer.dmcityview.com.

Next comes the Summer Stir in downtown Des Moines’ Historic Court District on Friday, June 26, from 5-9 p.m. This event has become a summer tradition, serving up cocktails and people-watching early in the evening before the Court District’s nightlife kicks into full gear. Venues and drink menus are still being finalized, because greatness takes time. Learn more at summerstirs.dmcityview.com.

Finally, we head to Historic East Village for another edition of our Summer Stir on Friday, July 31, from 5-9 p.m. The East Village event spun off from the original downtown Summer Stir after it became too big for one neighborhood to handle. And, honestly, with the East Village’s eclectic charm, diverse offerings and cocktail culture, it deserved its own spotlight anyway. Details on participating venues and featured drinks are coming soon. Visit summerstirs.dmcityview.com for updates and tickets.

Three events. Dozens of drinks. Hundreds of new friends you may or may not remember meeting. Summer won’t last forever, but the stories from these cocktail crawls probably will. I look forward to seeing you.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

FRESH FINDS
Local vendors bring flavor, passion and community to farmers markets.

By Rachel Harrington

Longer days and warmer nights can only mean one thing — farmers market season is back. With fresh-picked produce, handcrafted goods and sweet treats, the market is a weekly gathering place for both vendors and visitors.

From produce to pastries
For more than 20 years, Heidi and Brett Blanchard have participated in the Indianola Farmers Market.

"I was a stay-at-home mom, and we were a one-income family,” she recalls. “I tried to figure out how to keep doing that. I gave one thing a try at the farmers market. It succeeded, so I tried a second thing, and it was also successful.” ...
