Good morning to you!

We take some things in life for granted because we do them so often. Like brushing our teeth — or at least pretending we did before the dentist starts asking questions.

About 70% of us brush at least twice a day, the frequency recommended by dental professionals. Still, studies show 23% of Americans have gone two or more days without brushing. That means nearly one out of every four people treat toothpaste like an optional condiment.

Brushing your teeth sounds simple enough. Then you walk into the toothbrush aisle, and suddenly it feels like you are applying for a mortgage.

If you choose a manual toothbrush — the classic plastic stick with bristles — you first have to pick a size. Then a color. Then comes the big decision of soft, medium or hard bristles. After that, you are choosing between rounded or diamond-shaped heads. Buying a toothbrush now requires more strategy than fantasy football. It’s exhausting.

And toothpaste is no help. Whitening. Tartar control. Gum protection. Charcoal. Sensitive teeth. Mint blast. Extreme mint blast. Somewhere in that aisle is apparently a toothpaste capable of rebuilding a transmission and filing your taxes.

Electric toothbrushes don’t make life any easier. First, you may need financing. Then you have to decide between rotary heads that spin or sonic brushes that vibrate like a lawn mower in a dryer. Add in timers, pressure sensors and specialty brush heads for sensitive teeth, whitening or gum care, and suddenly you are one Bluetooth connection away from your toothbrush making life choices for you.

Let’s say you finally survive the decision-making process and buy a toothbrush. How long should you keep it? The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months — sooner if the bristles look frayed or it starts resembling a BBQ grill brush.

Dentists also remind us that brushing too hard can damage gums and enamel. So after spending 15 minutes choosing between medium and hard bristles, it turns out the correct answer was basically, “Relax.” That advice applies to more than dentistry.

So, we should brush our teeth twice a day, replace our toothbrushes regularly and try not to overthink it. Our teeth do not care whether our toothbrush has Bluetooth, a charging station or enough technology to communicate with satellites. They just want a little attention. Because at the end of the day, a toothbrush is one of the few things standing between us and a lecture from our dentists that somehow feels both deeply personal and wildly expensive.

And flossing? Oh, my. That’s a column for another day.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Corteva hosted a 100th anniversary celebration for Pioneer in April, then 86’ed the Pioneer name. Corteva Agriscience’s new seed spinoff, with research operations in Johnston, will be called Vylor, the Indianapolis-based company announced. Their explanations of the new name were ambiguous and confusing at best. Apparently “Pioneer” was just too much on point. ... Boone Valley Brewing will close in June after 14 years.

The Des Moines Biergarten at Water Works Park will host its first Maifest, May 16-17, to mark the Biergarten’s reopening for the season. The Biergarten is open 3-9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Homemade flavors and big dreams
Jacob Gomke loves ice cream. When he was 5 years old, he and his family were visiting Billy’s Ice Cream Store in Adel when he asked why they didn’t have a Captain America flavor.

“Captain America was his favorite character,” his mother, Jess Gomke, says. “My husband told him that he should come up with a Captain America flavor. Jacob took him literally and seriously and did just that.” ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: 76ers part ways with Daryl Morey, who leaves behind a messy situation for next front office. This past NBA season was the dictionary definition of a see-saw experience for the 76ers. They underachieved throughout the regular season despite hitting big on rookie VJ Edgecombe as big-money veterans Joel Embiid and Paul George struggled to stay on the floor. In the playoffs Philadelphia exorcised demons by pulling off a remarkable 3–1 upset of the No. 2 seed Celtics before getting absolutely plastered by the Knicks in a non-competitive second-round sweep. It was, in typical Philly fashion, a wild ride of extreme emotions. ... READ MORE
