Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Generally speaking, most remakes are just artists thinking they can make it better, sound better, or provide better words but only display how much they can't make it better (Cheap imitations?, April 22,2026). About somebody's parent imparting truth, would it have been better to stay in your ignorance? Didn't he do you a great service? If you like worship music, I heard a new version of ‘As The Deer’ by Shane and Shane on Worship Initiative Vol. 25 (live). It really resonated with my heart. My son says it was just the reverb effect that my heart responded to. I think there may be some of your friend's parent in him. I think I understand your frustration. Thank you for your columns. I do enjoy them.” - Donna

With a band name like Shane and Shane, how can they go wrong? - Shane

“Holy, moly does this column hit home (Having an agenda, April 27, 2026). I suffer from ADD or ADHD (who knows?), and I had it before it was cool. No one knew about this when I grew up, but all the teachers knew that the opportunity to claim our own share of attention was a struggle, and the report cards supported this with ‘More Progress Needed.’ From kindergarten to sixth grade, I had this on every report except for the last one. I found that, to combat this in my working career, an agenda was the saving grace. It allowed me to functionally prepare and make sure key points were not missed. The ‘Oh, I forgot’ is a disruptive statement and wastes time. Furthermore, customers appreciate it because, as you noted, it keeps meetings on track. This is the foundation on confirming any and all follow up and assigning this to close the loop. I have been teased from my team about doing this, but they realize that their time, too, is valuable, so we hit the key points and then get back to selling! Thank you so much, Shane.” - Rick

I am glad you enjoyed it, but I realize this type of time management is common sense to some and completely foreign to others. - Shane

“There's a word for a meeting without an agenda: free-for-all (Having an agenda, April 27, 2026).” - Brad

Good point, as that free-for-all can be costly. - Shane

“Your column on Earth Day brought back a bunch of memories (Littering lessons, April 29, 2026). Even before the official ‘bottle bill,’ my parents would drive slowly and stop the car to retrieve pop bottles from the side of the road. And that was when the deposit on a glass pop bottle was 3 cents. Of course, gas was a whole lot cheaper back then. Even later in life, my mom would go for a walk to and from town to Highway 17 and carry a trash bag to pick up cans and bottles. One time, she met a semi driver coming into town who saw what Mom was doing. He stopped his truck, rolled down the window, and asked if she'd like a few more cans. He opened his door to reveal empty cans and bottles littering the inside of the cab. He gladly gave them to Mom, who gladly took them off his hands.” - Bob

Unfortunately, we could use a lot more of that today. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Central Iowa Water Works' nitrate removal facility runs for 107 days in 2026. The nitrate removal facility of Central Iowa Water Work partially has been running for 107 days so far this year. The facility goes on when levels of the contaminant nitrate go high in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, the two main sources for drinking water in central Iowa. In recent years, the levels have trended upward, says David Cwiertny, a professor at the University of Iowa. ... READ MORE

FROM WHO-TV: Shutdown prevention bill sparks ‘power grab’ accusations. Senate Republicans passed a bill they say would prevent government shutdowns, but Democrats say the bill is a ‘power grab’ to limit the governor’s powers. The bill was amended on the Senate floor on Wednesday. ... READ MORE

FROM WOI: Iowa bill could limit SNAP for refugees, says Democratic senator amid federal compliance concerns. Restrictions proposed for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by Senate File 2422 would make it so only U.S. citizens could receive benefits, regardless of legal status. Republicans feel this measure will ensure the longevity of the program. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE WORLD: Trump administration says its war in Iran has been ‘terminated’ before 60-day deadline. The Trump administration is arguing that the war in Iran has already ended because of the ceasefire that began in early April, an interpretation that would allow the White House to avoid the need to seek congressional approval. The statement furthers an argument laid out by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during testimony in the Senate earlier Thursday, when he said the ceasefire effectively paused the war. Under that rationale, the administration has not yet met the requirement mandated by a 1973 law to seek formal approval from Congress for military action that extends beyond 60 days. ... READ MORE

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Amtrak may make it easier to bring guns on its trains despite the alleged attempt on Trump’s life. Amtrak is considering allowing people to store guns in lockboxes on most of its trains, which critics say would weaken security measures that instead should be strengthened in light of the shooting at last weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. ... READ MORE

Whiskey woes and Derby Day
As a bourbon surplus builds, whiskey makers are scaling back production. Earlier this year, spirits giant Suntory began a 12-month pause of Jim Beam. Competitors Diageo and Brown-Forman also announced cutbacks. Another distiller said it will halt distilling operations at its Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky, and Lux Row Distillers in Bardstown, Kentucky. The pause will last until “inventory levels support additional production,” which Suntory estimated would take at least one year. (Food Dive)

Kate King reported in Wall Street Journal in April that some big malls are in the midst of revivals thanks to Gen Z influencer shoppers. Malls are even redecorating to provide more photogenic Tik Tok backgrounds. Gen Z, they don't like whiskey but they love malls. What a time to be alive.

More Bourbon is consumed on Derby Day, which is tomorrow, than any other day of the year.

CELEBRATING HERITAGE
Residents reflect on the traditions that connect them to home.

By Rachel Harrington

Heritage takes many forms — from treasured recipes and holiday traditions to faith and family stories passed down through generations. For some, it is rooted in culture and language; for others, it is something intentionally built over time. Local families share how their unique backgrounds shape the lives they lead today and the legacies they hope to leave behind.

A heritage of love
As a child, Connie Phillips knew little about her family.

When she was about 2 years old, her mother became seriously ill, and her father placed his seven children in different homes. The three oldest sisters were adopted while her brothers were sent to farms in Iowa. Connie — then known as Colleen — was placed in an orphanage in Des Moines and later transferred to the Des Moines Children’s Home, where she lived until age 12. ...
