Good morning to you!

Earth Day has come and gone again. Maybe you planted a tree. Maybe you recycled something. Or maybe — like most of us — you just noticed how much junk is lying around and thought, “Someone should really do something about that.”

This year, I decided to be that “someone,” along with a dozen or so fellow Knights of Columbus members. We adopted a 2-mile stretch of Highway 44 east of Panora and spent 90 minutes picking up litter. By the end, we had 20 bulging bags of garbage.

The inventory was impressive in all the wrong ways: beer cans, water bottles, milk jugs, a few hubcaps and what appeared to be the scattered remains of a Ford Escort.

Our cleanup was part of Iowa’s Adopt-a-Highway program, which has been around since the 1980s. Volunteers agree to clean a stretch of road a couple of times a year. It is a simple idea: If you make people responsible for a piece of roadside, they are less likely to treat it like a moving dumpster.

I learned that lesson the hard way back in high school. A few friends and I were cruising to Des Moines in my buddy Dave’s AMC Hornet to see the Iowa Jam. Somewhere along the way, one of my buddies unwrapped a new Motley Crue cassette and casually tossed the plastic out the window. What he did not do was check the rearview mirror.

The state trooper directly behind us was not impressed. Lights flashed. We pulled over. He expressed his disappointment using several words not found in a church bulletin, then ordered us out of the car to pick up trash along the highway.

So there we were, a group of long-haired teenagers on our way to a rock concert cleaning ditches under official supervision. Twenty minutes later, we left with a warning, a bag of garbage and a very clear understanding of cause and effect.

Another lesson came from my Uncle Ray. After retiring, he rode his single-speed bike a few miles every day to Hy-Vee for coffee. Along the way, he noticed all the cans littering the roadside. Unlike most of us, he did not just complain about it. He brought a bag and started picking them up. Day after day. Mile after mile. No speeches. No social media posts. Just quiet persistence. It made him feel better, and it made the roadside look better, too. Iowa’s bottle deposit law, in place since 1978, certainly helped. A nickel per can may not sound like much, but it turns out five cents was just enough incentive to keep at least some empties out of the ditch. And it might have paid for Uncle Ray’s coffee, too.

If Earth Day got you thinking — even briefly — about doing something, here is an idea: Grab a bag and pick up some trash. You might not save the planet in an afternoon, but you will improve your corner of it.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

FROM AROUND THE NATION: Do you prefer to pay income taxes or sales taxes? Missouri voters will get to choose. It’s not every day — or even every decade — that voters are presented a decision like this: Should the state’s individual income tax be eliminated? When that question appears on a Missouri ballot later this year, it will mark the first time since the modern income tax began over a century ago that a U.S. state legislature has asked voters whether to eliminate the tax. Woebegone Wednesday
Sixty-nine-year-old former landscaper Phillip Dressel is standing in the way of Bayer settling a class action lawsuit brought by 200,000 people who claim Roundup made them sick. A $7.5 billion settlement reached earlier this year is in jeopardy. Dressel’s other option is proceeding with his individual case against Bayer.

The settlement could bring Dressel at least $48,000. A jury verdict, his lawyers estimate, could bring a payout totaling millions of dollars. However, opting to go it alone is risky: Roughly two-thirds of the 28 Roundup trials so far have ended in a loss for plaintiffs. It might get harder going forward. The Supreme Court on April 27 heard a case brought by Bayer in the company’s bid to narrow the volume of Roundup claims it is facing. But Dressel wants Bayer to admit that it marketed a potentially dangerous product. The potential settlement is Bayer’s latest attempt to end the mass litigation it faces for the weedkiller and fend off future lawsuits.  (WSJ) Meanwhile, Bayer is testing a new glyphosate-free weed killer in Australia.

CELEBRATING HERITAGE
Residents reflect on the traditions that connect them to home.

By Rachel Harrington

Family heritage shapes identity in deeply personal ways, connecting generations through stories, traditions and shared values. For some, those connections are rooted in centuries-old immigration journeys. For others, they are preserved through food, family businesses or a commitment to education. For many, family history is not just something to remember — it is something to actively live out today.

Ancestors from Norway
For Caitie Hart, aspects of her maternal heritage have remained an important part of her life.

“My dominant heritage is from Oslo, Norway,” Hart says. “I’m the fourth generation in the United States since my great-great-grandfather, Mikkal Bakke, immigrated here in 1889.”

For more than a century, Hart’s family has carried on a love for its Norwegian heritage, along with traditions and vocations passed down through generations.
After immigrating, Bakke settled in Ottosen in Humboldt County, Iowa, according to census records. ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: What the Steelers’ rare contract move on Aaron Rodgers means for the QB’s future. The Steelers have executed a rare contract maneuver that all but guarantees Aaron Rodgers will play in Pittsburgh—or nowhere — in 2026. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers placed the right of first refusal tag on the quarterback, meaning that Rodgers can accept a 10% raise off of last year’s salary (paying him $15 million next season). As Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer points out, the move allows Pittsburgh to match any offer sheet that Rodgers should sign with another team, and would also give them a compensatory pick if he ultimately leaves. ... READ MORE
