Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“About 55 years ago, as a 13 year old, I tried to apply to ‘Rent a kid’ (Get a job, April 14, 2026). Most of the younger ones detasseled corn. I never got past the telephone interview question of, ‘How tall are you?’ At 5-feet, 1-inches, I was apparently not tall enough to be in the field in 1971. So it was back to mowing yards, shoveling snow and cleaning typewriters for me.” - Mike

Don’t pick on those tall, clumsy guys, Mike. It’s not their fault. - Shane

“It is simply amazing that you have to even write about this, but you are completely spot on (Get a job, April 14, 2026). When I turned 16, after working many odd jobs before that, my dad sat me down and laid out expectations and demands, and it was not open to discussion for my summer full-time employment. ‘You will work at least for 40 hours. If you are asked to work overtime, you will. You can be sick after 5 p.m. or on the weekends but not during work hours. Sickness is a state of mind. And, with all that money you make, 50% will go into long-term savings, never to be touched; 25% will go toward a large purchase, car, drum set, etc.; and the last 25%, is all yours. Go out and blow it and buy whatever you want.’ Seemed to make sense so many years ago and set a strong foundation of the value of money. As always, thanks for sharing.” - Rick

Now, if we could just get our government to stick to a budget like that. - Shane

“Well said, Shane (Get a job, April 14, 2026). But you forgot to tell the softies who think otherwise to get off your yard.” - Brad

Hey, softies, get off my yard! - Shane

“My dad, being an army man, had a clock that played Reveille so loud you would think the bugler was in the room with you (No bells required, April 20, 2026). It looked like a miniature plastic cartoon soldier. I'm sure it must have been a gift from his kids.” - Tammy

It beats that plaid tie. Maybe. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Prairie Meadows is one of only two casinos in the U.S. that the IRS recognizes as nonprofit. It has raised more than $2.3 billion since 1989 for support of numerous Polk County entities. However, it was pitched to voters as a means to ending property tax increases. That ain't working.

JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Romantasy run amuck

By Joe Weeg

“Trouble (oh, we got trouble) Right here in River City (right here in River City)” — Meredith Wilson, “The Music Man.”

Like most of you, I generally think I’m a decent person. I let people who are in a rush cut in front of me at the grocery store. I smilingly say “no problem” when my request for two eggs over easy results in two pale yellow hockey pucks that are rocks. When an injustice occurs, I’m probably not the first one yelling at the unfairness, but I married a woman who is one of the first.

All this is to say that I am just like you — a decent person on most occasions.

But am I, really? ...
