Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, just a thank you again for getting the pictures of buildings that have been sold in the Des Moines area back. Today I sadly saw my old school, Franklin Junior High School, in the picture. That was such a grand school back in late 1960s. So many wonderful memories took place in that building for the lucky ones who went there. I can still remember several names of my teachers: Mr. Bench, Mr. Moe, Miss Cotton and Mrs. Traster the French teacher. They had a lasting impact on my life. Thanks for the memories.” - Marilyn

And, now, a new group of students will be creating memories in that building, too. - Shane

“Speaking of ‘lost’ language or communications, my mother used to label our Christmas presents under the tree in ‘shorthand’ so as young children we did not know which were for us and were not too inquisitive and shaking present boxes too much pre-Christmas (Cursive writing, April 8, 2026). Of course, the IBM Selectric typewriter changeable letter ball instantly transformed that machine from block to cursive if desired.” - Mike

Because, who didn’t want to type in cursive? - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I don’t remember the date or your column but it dealt with how we are forced to throw things away because they cannot be fixed. My great-aunt, born in 1894, lived a frugal but enriched life and had this saying: ‘Use it up, wear it out, fix it up or do without.” Everything in her 150-year-old home still worked! Have a great day.” - Bob

We could all benefit by taking more of your great-aunt’s advice. - Shane

“Shane, thanks for the Monday morning laugh (How do you do your laundry?, April 13, 2026)! I hover between categories 1 and 2. OK, closer to 1. I have three detergents, mesh bags for sweaters and delicates, laundry balls for the dryer, and, if a sock goes missing, I will absolutely turn my house upside down to find it!” - Debbie

Let me guess. You balance your checkbook to the penny, too? And all your bills face the same way? I know someone like that. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Goodbye Joe
Coffee grower Luiz Paulo Dias Pereira Filho told Wall Street Journal that he expects his harvest of eugenioides, an ancestor of the arabica plant, to sell for $190,476 for 10 standardized 60-kilogram bags. Arabica prices have slipped this year to near $400 per bag.

"It’s an extremely sweet coffee," Pereira Filho said of the rare species. It doesn’t have bitterness because its caffeine level is practically considered decaf. Sensitive to climate and other factors, eugenioides  plants have low productivity, Pereira Filho said he expects each of his 5 hectares planted with the species to produce just two bags each, less than a tenth of the average yield for arabica.

We fully expect $10 a pound hamburger to be common by fall. But $20 cups of coffee are not for us.

Sig’s owner, Theresa Beachler, is a theriogenologist at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. ...
