Good morning to you!

According to a 2021 story posted at YouGov, Americans were asked a simple question: “Are people in your state polite, rude or just aggressively average?” The study may be a few years old, but the answer, as it turns out, is still a nationwide exercise in self-awareness and denial with regional stereotypes doing a victory lap.

Let’s start with the big picture from the study: Most Americans looked around, shrugged and said, “Eh, we are fine.” About 46% said their state is “about the same” as the others, while 26% claimed above-average politeness and 19% admitted to above-average rudeness. In other words, nearly half the country believes they are the human equivalent of room-temperature tap water.

But then there is the Northeast, which apparently woke up and chose honesty. Leading the “we know what we did” category is Rhode Island, where a striking 42% of residents openly admit their state is ruder than the rest of America. Not far behind are Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, states where bluntness can be less a personality flaw and more a municipal service.

Meanwhile, in the opposite corner, Hawaii seems to be hosting a nationwide politeness retreat. A full 60% of its residents insist they are nicer than everyone else, which is either true or the most casual brag in human history. Close behind are Vermont, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wyoming, places where people will apologize to you when you give them a door ding.

The South, long the public relations department for “Southern hospitality,” mostly lives up to its branding. Residents across the region generally believe they are more polite than average, except Florida, which once again refuses to follow instructions, polling slightly ruder than polite.

Then there is the Midwest, America’s emotional support region. True to reputation, Midwestern states largely see themselves as nicer than average, confirming suspicions that somewhere in the Hawkeye state, people are still holding doors open for strangers like it is an Olympic sport. Iowa nice, indeed.

What makes this poll especially delightful is that it is entirely based on self-perception. No outsider audits, no hidden cameras, just Americans judging their neighbors while probably sitting in traffic caused by those same neighbors.

So, what have we learned? The Northeast knows it is rude and simply does not care. The South insists it is charming and might actually be. The Midwest is quietly winning the kindness contest nobody officially announced. Hawaii is out there radiating such good vibes it might legally qualify as a mood stabilizer. And the rest of the country is insisting they are “about the same,” which, statistically speaking, is either very humble or exactly what a rude person would say.

What do you think? Agree with the study? Disagree? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thank you for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
McDonald's remains its own arch enemy when it comes to messaging. CEO Chris Kempczinski went on camera recently to introduce the chain's vaunted new Big Arch burger to their social media audience. In that video, he takes such a timid, tiny bite of the burger that top executives from Burger King and Wendy’s made similar social media spots taking huge enthusiastic bites of their signature burgers. Kempczinski went to Wall Street Journal for damage control, doing an interview with them explaining that his pathetic show of burger-love was his mommy's fault because she taught him "not to talk with my mouth full." He also tried to explain that McD was adjusting to "a new world of marketing" where corporations no longer have total control of their messaging. We aren't biting.

McDonald’s is still trying to come back from COVID-era price hikes that turned off their value customers. Yet their new Big Arch burger sells for $7.46 in Columbia, South Carolina, but for $12.99 in Lewiston, Maine. That is for the burger alone.

This is why Chili's is stealing market share from McD with their $10.99 "Best Meal Deal" including a half-pound burger with fries, a bottomless appetizer and a drink with free refills.

ART NEWS
Blood, bombs and Americana

By Jim Duncan

Twenty years have passed since Des Moines Art Center hosted its tribute to Ana Mendietta. She was a Cuban refugee who escaped Castro’s reign of terror, was raised in Sioux City and first rose to fame in Iowa City where her 1973 performance piece “Rape Scene” was first performed.

Photos of “Rape Scene,” in all their bloody, nude brutality, documented a subsequent show in which Ana reenacted the rape and murder of a fellow student at the University of Iowa, where she was studying. That work became a real moment in the feminist agenda — a statement on the issues of violence and defenselessness. ...
