Good morning to you!

It has been said that challenges are what make life interesting and that overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. That makes a lot of sense, except during the exact times you are dealing with those challenges.

We had a couple of significant challenges at Big Green Umbrella Media recently. I am still waiting for them to make life meaningful.

A couple of months ago, we were notified by a local company that hosts our email that the owners would be retiring and shutting down the operation. We switched to them more than 20 years ago after frustrations with one of the Big Tech companies we were using. We wanted faster response times and personal service, and we got it. So, going back to one of the Big Tech companies was concerning. We explored our options and, ultimately, decided we should buy the company, which also hosts and designs websites, as we do. We close on the sale Jan. 1, but we mutually reached out to the company’s current customers with a quick note explaining the upcoming sale and that we would be following up soon.

Meanwhile, after the letter was sent a few weeks ago, internet service from another Big Tech company to the current owners’ operation went down for nearly two days. That meant no business email for us or for the customers we just notified. Of course, we had nothing to do with the internet being down, but the timing was awful — not that there is ever a good time to have your email not work. It was a reminder of how important email is to our business and to so many others. The good news is that all is working fine again.

Then, a week ago Sunday, I was notified by the cleaning crew for our Johnston office that we had a water leak. The photos they sent showed significant water coming from our warehouse area and seeping into the finished space. Jolene and I zipped over to the office on Sunday evening with a big shop vac and some mops and got to work cleaning up. But, the water kept coming.

Ultimately, the property manager showed up, and we started tearing sheetrock out and searching in the ceiling to locate the leak — which turned out to be an abandoned plastic water line inside one of the walls that ruptured. We capped it off and stopped the water from leaking. Finding it was a relief; looking at the aftermath of water damage was not. We cleaned up what we could and called in the professionals to dry everything out with an army of industrial fans and dehumidifiers. The repairs will hopefully begin this week.

These challenges have certainly made life interesting. But meaningful? In time, after we fully overcome these trials, maybe — but not yet.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Chowhound named Drake Diner “Iowa’s most beloved diner.” DD's credentials are legend. The brainchild of the late Bill Knapp was the sine qua non for the revitalization of the entire Drake neighborhood. It has been one of the top three most requested meeting places for CITVIEW's "Lunch with..." interviews over the last decade, and the first place reviewed by Food Dude since determining to exclusively use subjects that comprise Des Moines' special restaurant identity.

Prime and Providence made USA Today’s "20 best steakhouses in America." We suspect Des Moines Register’s Entertainment Editor Susan Stapleton influenced this decision, and we could not appreciate it more. P&P goes the extra 6,340 miles (distance between Kobe, Japan, and Jordan Creek) for the most elite beef in the world and adds the rare touch of charcoal grilling.

COLLECTIONS & HOBBIES
Mercury inspires extensive Hot Wheels collection

By Cyote Williams

Whether from inside a box in your basement, in your child’s collection of toys, or perhaps sitting on your shelf, you likely have held a Hot Wheel in your hands before. After all, the first Hot Wheels were introduced in 1968 by Mattel, and the total number produced is in the billions. John Marchant is no stranger to the miniature cars.

Marchant, a now retired truck driver, says he officially started his Hot Wheels collection in 1995. Hot Wheels made a Mercury, a car Marchant once had, and figured that would be a good place to start. However, he never anticipated the collection would become what it did. ...

The quilt from a beloved aunt. Knitted sweaters from Grandma. A child’s table and chairs crafted in a relative’s workshop. A personalized ornament. Handmade gifts are unique, but, more than that, they are gifts of time spent in the crafting, imagination in their design and love in their giving.

Returning love by crafting
