Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Bob and Doug for Christmas! You bet (My two front teeth, Dec. 10, 2025)! I love their song, but, we go farther. My boys and I have three movies we watch every Christmas: 'A Christmas Carol’ with Alastair Sim; ‘It's a Wonderful Life’; and ‘Strange Brew’ with Bob and Doug. To those who don't like ‘Strange Brew,’ they can take off and go get a jelly!” - Brad

It's a beauty way to go. - Shane

“I agree 200% (My two front teeth, Dec. 10, 2025). Classics you should also include: ‘I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas; ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.’ For a novelty song, this is an odd pick, but my brother Rick always was cracking up on Cheech and Chong's ditty.” - Rex

What, no Sister Mary Elephant? - Shane

“Shane, I meant to send this earlier, but I had to go to Wal-Mart to see if they had ‘round tuits.’ Plus, I was too busy and was going to send it later (Why people miss deadlines, Dec. 15, 2025). Plus, I thought it might be a waste of time. Plus, there really was no purpose, and I didn't really see a reward for doing it anyway. Then, I was interrupted and I had other things to do and they were easier. Plus, I'm retired, so I didn't really have the time anyway. Finally, I'm sorry, I just didn't get around to it!” - James

Lazy, good-for-nothing kids. - Shane

“I gave away my Christmas card display this year (Christmas cards, Dec. 16, 2025). For the last several years, I've received only two or three pretty cards that I would want to display. The rest are photo cards. The same photos that I have already seen on Facebook. I guess you could say I'm OK with the tradition dying.” - Dana

Somewhere, a Hallmark executive is weeping. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Japan's new, first-ever female prime minister has poked China so hard that the Chinese are not allowing their citizens to visit Japan. Since China accounts for nearly half of all tourists, expect another year of great deals for Americans visiting the land of the rising sun. China is also trying to cut the Japanese off from eel exports. Japan consumes by far the most eel in the world.

Argentina has increased pistachio acreage fives times in five years. U.S., Iran and Turkey still lead in pistachio production but demand is increasing exponentially. Dubai chocolate is the main reason for that.

Laos is all-in in developing hydrogen roasted coffee. The idea is that adds value because it doesn’t have a carbon footprint like coffees roasted with natural gas. Hydrogen is expensive though, but Laos is rich in hydro-electric power and thinks it can reduce the price of hydrogen by using hydroelectric power in hydrogen production.

Handmade for the holidays
Residents share the joy of gifts from the heart.

By Rachel Harrington

The quilt from a beloved aunt. Knitted sweaters from Grandma. A child’s table and chairs crafted in a relative’s workshop. A personalized ornament. Handmade gifts are unique, but, more than that, they are gifts of time spent in the crafting, imagination in their design and love in their giving.

One stitch at a time
Joanna Esser began crocheting animals just a few years ago. She had a teacher friend who was putting together an “Under the Sea” classroom theme, and she was inspired to try to crochet an octopus.

“I had tried several crochet projects before that,” Esser shares. “My mom was part of a church ministry that makes about 20 or so rectangles into quilts and blankets. Prior to 2022, I had made a few rectangles for her. So, when I tried the octopus, I discovered that I really loved crocheting small animals. It wasn’t a long project, but one that was intricate and adorable, and I could see the results really quickly.” ...
