Chi Chi’s opened its first restaurant in 20 years, in the Twin Cities where it began 50 years ago. Chi-Chi’s closed in 2004 after a hepatitis outbreak tied to green onions in the salsa sickened 650 people, left four dead and spurred a slew of lawsuits against the chain. Founded in 1975 by Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee, the chain once boasted more than 200 locations nationwide. The outlet on University in West Des Moines rivaled Jimmy's American Cafe as the hottest spot in town.
Terrace Hill hosts a program today at 5 p.m. based on the books of Iowa food writer and century farmer Darcy Mausby. It’s free but you need tickets. Terrace Hill also hosts a Victorian dinner Nov. 20. It costs $125.
