Good morning to you!

What’s in a name? A lot, apparently.

I distinctly remember being a kid and pouring a bowl of Sugar Frosted Flakes on Saturday mornings while watching cartoons. Then, somewhere along the line, Tony the Tiger and the crew decided to drop the word “sugar” from the name. After a bit of research, I learned that this name change happened in 1983, more than three decades after Sugar Frosted Flakes were introduced. I guess they didn’t want to focus on sugar anymore. Regardless, they’re still grrrreat!

A transformation I didn’t notice was the name change with Dunkin’ Donuts, the store known for coffee and, well, donuts. When coffee started outselling the donuts in 2019, the company officially dropped “Donuts” from its name, becoming simply Dunkin’. Just exactly what we are to be dunking now, though, is unclear.

Sugar and donuts are not the only words on the naughty list. You can add the word “fried.” In 1991, KFC Kentucky Fried Chicken became KFC in an effort to separate itself from the word, which it felt had a negative health connotation. The rebranding was part of an arguably unsuccessful effort to update the brand.
Apple, which we now know as the tech giant of computers, phones, tablets, smart watches and more, even changed its name. What was once Apple Computer was shortened to just “Apple” in 2007. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said then that it was no longer a computer company. “The Mac, iPod, Apple TV and iPhone. Only one of those is a computer. So we’re changing the name.” Seemed to work out fine for them.

On the other end of the spectrum, the name change from Facebook to Meta in 2021 never quite stuck, making even the change from Twitter to X seem like a success. (It wasn’t.)

Few name changes brought about as much passion as the renaming of the Washington Redskins to the Washington Commanders in 2022. Three years later, it is starting to take shape. The football team faced criticism over the original name's offensive connotations related to Native Americans. The rebranding was part of a larger effort to address racial insensitivity and honor the team's history.

What brand changes did I miss? Send me a note and let me know.

Thanks for reading, and have a wonderful Wednesday.

Woebegone Wednesday
Tony Lemmo and George Formaro, Des Moines’ most curious restaurateurs, have been deep seeking the origins of Italian breadmaking in Des Moines – from the starter yeasts to the ruins of backyard ovens. Among their discoveries so far: Noah’s Ark is making their breads, including their addictive yeast rolls, with a starter that is 100 years old this year; St. Anthony’s church was “built by bread” used in its fundraising; today that church has “tamale nights;” the Italian owned Supreme Bakery’s bread bags were used to ship food to Des Moines' soldiers in WWII; that bakery provided first jobs to multiple future restaurateurs in Des Moines.

Noah's Ark began as Union Depot Cafe, seen here in 1950.

FILM REVIEW
‘Roofman’ is a charming heist in a criminally underused setting

By David Rowley

“Roofman”
R | 126 minutes
Director: Derek Cianfrance
Writers: Derek Cianfrance, Kirt Gunn
Stars: Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, Peter Dinklage

Derek Cianfrance’s “Roofman” is a stranger-than-fiction dramady that finds both humor and heartache in one man’s misguided pursuit of the American dream. Based on the true story of the “Roofman Robber,” the film boasts a charming performance from Channing Tatum and a premise ripe with comedic and dramatic possibility. The result is a film that is as oddly endearing as its protagonist, balancing moments of genuine charm and tension with frustrating detours into schlocky melodrama.   ...

Darsee spent eight years there before returning to Johnston, where she had always hoped to be, to work with middle school students and coach cross country and track, the same sports she participated in during her own years at Urbandale High School. ...
