Good morning to you!

We all need each other — young and old — to share our stories and better understand our differences. Veterans do, too.

I was taking photos at a Memorial Day service at a local cemetery a few years ago, and an elderly man walked over to me and asked who I was. I told him my name and what I was doing, and he thanked me immensely for providing coverage of the event and the local veterans. I could see from the focus in his eyes — and in the firmness of his handshake — that he truly meant it.

Our discussion then steered toward the status of veterans’ organizations in Iowa communities and the need to attract members, especially younger ones. What I heard from this gentleman was that the desire to have these young veterans be part of the organizations is as much about helping the older folks as it is the younger ones.

I recall going into the VFW Hall in my hometown as a child and seeing photos of my father and my uncle on the wall as past commanders. I was certainly proud of them both for serving our country, and that respect deepened when I saw how they served their fellow veterans later, too.

That day at the cemetery made me think about veterans and what we could do to help honor them. The first step is to do something we should be doing every day, and that is to sincerely thank our veterans for their service with the same gratitude that the man in the cemetery gave me. And with the barrel of ink I am sitting on, I feel a need to do even more.

With that in mind, we are publishing salutes to more than 700 local veterans, both living and deceased, in CITYVIEW, our Iowa Living magazines, and our Guthrie County publications. We appropriately honor those who have died, but we also have more than 150,000 veterans living in Iowa today, representing more than 6% of our civilian population 18 and older. They deserve our appreciation, too.

With that in mind, I hope you will join me in thanking these veterans today — and every day.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thank you for reading.

Tramontina is a 110-year-old Brazilian company that makes cookware. We got a look at their new line for holiday season 2025 last week. This "Mesa Enameled" cast iron series looks and behaves a lot like Le Creuset but costs much less. Tariffs on Brazil did not appear to affect prices this year. Available this month at Walmarts for $39-69. That's this week's Wonder Bargain.

Two of Iowa's all time best chefs will collaborate on the revival of Bistro Montage. Enosh Kelley (original Bistro Montage) and David Baruthio (Baru66, Cafe Madeleine) are huge reasons why Des Moines' food scene has soared the last 20 years. Their kitchens developed all kinds of young stars, including Ian and Jess Robertson of Oak Park. They met each other in those kitchens. The new cafe will occupy space in the new super-green building on Ingersoll.
