Good morning to you!

We are in the process of planning our company Christmas party right now. As in past years, we spend much time debating on the where, when and how — the fine details.

We have held our parties at a number of locations over the years. We once rented suites at a hockey game and had everyone there. We have held it at a casino. Restaurants have been a common choice, as have bars. Clubhouses have given us plenty of room, and we have even used larger event centers when needed. The most important “where” thing I learned was to make sure the location is easy to find. Nobody — and I mean nobody — likes the pressure in struggling to find the address (or being late to the party).

Another common debate is “when” we should have the party. Some argue that we are all too busy before the holidays and it is better to have it in January when things settle down. That may be true, but, unfortunately, much of the Christmas spirit seems to be lost by then, at least for me. I do agree that weekends can get hectic, so we opt to have ours during the week.

The most discussion in our Christmas party planning is in the “how.” In other words, what do we do at this party? One year, we hired a magician to present. He was great. We have done the white elephant gift exchange. That gets uncomfortable. We try to do an “ice-breaking” exercise each time, too, which has been hit or miss. (The sock-matching one was quite good, though.) Do we provide or offer alcohol, or not? Invite spouses? Children? Santa Claus?

Having now attended and/or planned company Christmas parties for a few decades, and after much trial and error, I finally learned to focus on the most important aspect — the people.

In our company, we have a core of full- and part-time employees, as well several dozen independent contractors who contribute in a variety of ways. We don't get to make physical contact with the contractor folks very often, and our Christmas party provides a wonderful way to do that in a comfortable setting with some great food and beverage.

I am reminded of this need to focus on the people after learning a great lesson in planning our CITYVIEW Best of Des Moines parties. In the early years, we had jugglers, belly dancers, ice sculptures, live music and more. What I finally learned was that, although those things were entertaining, the main reasons people attend that party are to be recognized and to celebrate with the people they care about. The same thing goes for our Christmas parties.

So, we won’t have any belly dancers or magicians this year, but we will gather together in a comfortable setting with some great food and drink, give thanks for our blessings and celebrate each other.

What do you think? What makes a great company Christmas party? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Meat eaters alert — beware the alpha gal. Lone star ticks have been found in Dubuque County. Those ticks infect humans with alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), a sugar molecule. When a lone star tick bites a human, it injects AGS into the blood stream. The immune system then develops an allergic reaction to alpha-gal, which is most present in red meat from pork, beef and lamb. Iowa agriculture does not want people developing allergies to red meat so this tick is really scary here.

Our pop quiz Big Green Umbrella T shirt winners last week were Laurie DeHaai and Kris Laurson. (KFC buckets in the company's first decades included 14 pieces, plus rolls and gravy. They cost less than $6 through 1970.)
