Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Our teenage granddaughters gave us an update on current meaning of slang this Sunday's noon when we met them for lunch (Our fickle language, Nov. 3, 2025). I'm still not sure about ‘6, 7’ that is spoken while you make juggling motions with your hands. ‘So so’ was the best definition I retained. The other was ‘Click it,’ which means pay attention, which I obviously wasn't doing. It, too, includes a hand gesture of snapping a picture. May I add to our knowledge ‘ranking’ from the ancient days of the 1960s that involved insults to you, your family, your existence. Another of my favorites is making hand gestures imitating signing when repeating something I just said, usually followed by the offended party making a gesture we all immediately recognize.” - Frank

Looks to me like you are killing it. Sick. - Shane

“Over the weekend. I was listening to the news and heard President Trump report that he was reducing the tariffs of Chinese imports to 47%. I had criticized companies for not putting their prices in their catalogs (Digital Gift Guide, Oct. 29, 2025). I realize now that at the time they were publishing them, the price of many of their items for Christmas from China were probably in flux. Until the president had established an accurate price for those tariffs, those companies would be unable to establish an accurate price for their products. My apologies for being a ‘First World Whiner.’ ” - John

Yet another reason to buy American-made products. - Shane

“I grew up in a suburb of St. Louis that was much like Windsor Heights. It was big enough to have its own police and fire but not big enough for its own school district. We too had the metal 30-gallon can with the lid (Taking out the trash, Nov. 4, 2025). It’s what happened to the ‘garbage’ after it was put in that can that you didn’t write about. Once a week that can got hauled out to the curb by me or my brother. Sometime during the day a ‘garbage truck’ came down the street stopping at every house. There were two men staffing that truck. One drove while the other manually emptied the cans into the rear of the truck. Every so often, the truck would pause, and the compactor would sweep down and compress the garbage while the engine roared. You could hear it two blocks away. When the truck was full, it would disappear for a time while they made a trip to the local dump to empty out. The dump was not covered in any way, and you could smell it for miles down wind especially when it would catch fire from time to time. What we have today is much more sanitary and a lot quieter.” - Bill

The sight, sound and smell of the garbage truck is something most of us will never forget. - Shane

Chicken — no bones about it
Upon flying into town early this century, I followed three children down the escalator at the Des Moines airport. Their mom was waiting for them, and, when they spotted her, they ran to her yelling "Guess what Mommy, Grandma made us chicken that had bone in it." Since that evening I have worried that "chicken with bone" has become a thing only for seniors and chefs. After decades as the absolute king of fried chicken, KFC fell all the way to No. 4 in American chicken sales this year. The three chains ahead of it now are Chick-fil-A, Raising Cane’s and Famous Dave's. None bother with bone-in chicken. And KFC is opening a new chain that won't sell bone-in chicken at all: "Saucy" focuses instead on tenders with 14 sauces.

My grandmother taught me that sauces, spices and herbs were what one used to disguise the fact that their food is flavorless. Julia Child pretty much said the same thing when she described modern American chickens as tasting like "teddy bear stuffing." Is the future of bone-in fried chicken now left to Southern places like Bubba and Good Eatin's, dinner clubs like Chicago Speakeasy, Maxie's and Christopher's, elevated convenience store chains like Kwik-Star and Buckee's, and supermarket delis?

What happened to chicken with bones? American lifestyles changed. These days, consumers eat 26% of their fast-food orders in their cars, according to market-research firm Circana. Even old folk like me don't want the mess of bone-in chicken in their car.

Chicken on the bone quiz. We have Big Green Umbrella T-shirts for the first two correct answers to this pop quiz: "From 1957 through the 1970s, KFC (then Kentucky Fried Chicken) sold millions of cardboard buckets of bone-in chicken. How many pieces of chicken were in the buckets then? Send to jd91446@aol.com.

FEATURE STORY
A city of screens

By Kristian Day

Capitol composite. Courtesy of Mark Heggen
The first movie I saw in a theater was “Ghostbusters II” at the Showcase Cinemas in Milan, Illinois. My parents asked if I wanted to see that or “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” It was 1989, and I was a mere 4 years old. “The Real Ghostbusters” cartoon was on TV, and I had an abundance of related toys, so, of course, I wanted to see “Ghostbusters II.” The original “Ghostbusters” film was also one of the few VHS tapes that we owned because it came with our VCR when it was purchased. My dad would put that on repeatedly until the VCR eventually snapped the tape while it was rewinding. (We paid to have it fixed.). ...

By Rachel Harrington

The calendar page has turned to November and thoughts to the holiday season. A chill is in the air, and the aroma of pies, cookies and turkey dinners waft from the kitchen. Halls are being decked, mantles decorated and mistletoe hung. Indeed, the holiday season is upon us, and how better to celebrate than with family gatherings and hometown festivities?
