Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. I really enjoy your writings. I did want to comment about your online gambling comments (Online gambling concerns, Oct. 27, 2025). I run a nonprofit organization. It has been several years ago now, but I had a bookkeeper who embezzled a substantial amount of funds from us to feed a gambling habit — and this was before online gambling was even a thing. I was told by several sources that the crime of embezzlement was becoming much more common due to gambling issues. Our situation ended up resolving itself satisfactorily because her dad was a wealthy landowner in northern Iowa and he wrote us a check for the amount that she took to keep her out of jail. But, it was a tremendous hassle for several months trying to get everything sorted out.” - John

The addiction is real, as you and your organization unfortunately learned. - Shane

“Check out ‘Phantasm.’ It's kind of weird and slow, but the end is a grabber (Scary movies, Oct. 28, 2025).” - Brad

Well, now I have to see it. You have not led me astray yet! - Shane

“Shane, this guy gave me more chills than Jason, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger combined (Scary movies, Oct. 28, 2025).” - Kevin

Yikes. Rev. Henry Kane is certainly in the top five. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. I grew up an urban environment with so many stores and malls within walking distance or a short drive of our home that catalogs were a novelty to me (Digital Gift Guide, Oct. 29, 2025). As I became familiar with the Sears Catalog, Penny's Catalog, and their catalog stores, I became equally, if not more, comfortable with catalog shopping, except for clothes. I had to learn how certain brands fit, and as I grew older and my waistline expanded, I realized a 32 wasn't going to cut it anymore. None of your darn business what the waistline is now. The trend I've noticed in the new catalogs is the savings are published but the prices are a secret to be researched. If I'm looking at say the Sam's or Fleet Farm catalogs, I have to get the tablet or phone out and do my due diligence. It's one of the unrelenting First World problems we now face.” - John

All businesses should remember to make buying easy for the consumer, but they must have their reasons. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Wine snobbery, measured. In a test by California Institute of Technology, people recorded more pleasure from the same wine when they were told it was more expensive. The pleasure was genuine. When hooked up to an MRI scanner, their brains lit up like Christmas trees, thus demonstrating a correlation between nutritional idiocy and economic idiocy. (WSJ)

Drumming up the next generation
Cronbaugh scholarship nurtures upcoming talent.

By Rachel Harrington

A new scholarship for middle school drummers has made headlines in south central Iowa. On Aug. 29, the Craig Cronbaugh Drum Studies Scholarship was presented to its first recipient, Tyler Ramirez of Indian Hills Junior High School. The scholarship, named after and by Craig Cronbaugh, was born out of his dedication, hard work, and a love for music.

“I was a professional drummer in the 1970s and 1980s. It was how I made my living,” Cronbaugh says. “In 2022, I was inducted as a musician for my drumming career into the Midwest All-Music Hall of Fame. I found out about the induction in the summer of 2022. While the summer was rolling on, Midwest All-Music Association (MAMA) asked if I would fill their need for a board member. At first, I said no, then later their secretary resigned, and I was asked if I’d be willing to fill that role. I said I’d think about it, and I accepted both roles as secretary and board member. I was inducted into MAMA that fall. I then put on my MAMA shirt and have been the secretary ever since.” ...
