Good morning to you!

“If I had known I would influence so many guitarists, I would have practiced more.”

Those are the words of Ace Frehley, the former guitarist and one of the founding members of the rock band KISS. He died last Thursday at the age of 74. That quote personified Frehley, who lived a carefree life and enjoyed a good laugh.

Frehley was not considered to be one of the great guitarists by the purists, but he knew how to put on a show with his Spaceman persona, his smoking Gibson Les Paul guitar and his New York groove. As a result, many of today’s popular guitarists were influenced by him, including Dimebag Darrell, John 5 and Slash. Even grunge icon Mike McCready and alt-hero Tom Morello have shown appreciation for Ace.

“I don’t regret anything I’ve done in my life. You live and you learn.”

To the dismay of his fans, Frehley left KISS in 1982. He rejoined the band in 1996 but left again in 2002. He did things his way. And when it didn’t feel right, he walked away. He detailed this, his solo efforts and much more in his 2011 book appropriately titled “No Regrets.”

“We have only today; yesterday’s gone, and tomorrow is uncertain. That’s why they call it the present. And sobriety really is a gift — for those who are willing to receive it.”

Frehley spoke openly about his drug and alcohol addictions, as did his band members who said those were the reasons for his departures from KISS. He partied hard, and the lifestyle caught up with him after years of mental and physical destruction, including a near-death auto accident and an on-stage electrocution that inspired him to write the song, “Shock Me.” He claimed a commitment to sobriety in his final years.

“My life has been a roller coaster ride, but somehow I’ve always been able to land on my feet and still play the guitar.”

Some good friends and I saw Frehley play in a concert on Nov. 16 of last year at the Val Air Ballroom. He needed help getting on and off the stage. He didn’t move much while he played. No guitar solos on his knees. No guitar smashing. It was clear that his days were numbered, but he still knew how to put on a great show. On Oct. 16, 2025, 11 months after that concert, Ace Frehley died from a fall that resulted in a brain bleed. This time, unfortunately, he didn’t land on his feet. And he will no longer play the guitar — at least not on Earth.

Rest easy, Spaceman.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Gloria Henriquez is a military nurse turned restaurateur. She also heads up the Iowa Latino Hospitality Council (ILHC) — a spinoff of the Iowa Restaurant Association (IRA) and Iowa Hospitality Association. We asked her to lunch recently and met at her Peruvian café Tullpa on Merle Hay Road.

Over bowls of ceviche and plates of chicharron of calamari and yucca, we talked about the restaurant business, the immigrant experience in Iowa and the marvels of Peruvian cuisine. Iowa Latino Restaurant Week was finishing its second season of bargain-priced dinners and lunches when we met. ...

Costume creations
Residents share how they add their own touches to Halloween garbs.

By Ashley Rullestad

When it comes to Halloween, some people like to pull out all the stops. They turn their yards into haunted or cartoon landscapes. They carve pumpkins, bob for apples, and offer the best treats to their trick-or-treaters. And, they put their energy and holiday spirit into making sure their costumes — or their kids’ — make others “ooh” and “aah” … and perhaps shudder.

Outside the box
Tammy Frank is the creative type, and Halloween gives her a great excuse to get the creative juices flowing.

“I'm all about handmade and DIY projects, and I love taking the outside-the-box approach with costumes,” Tammy says.

She and her husband, Shawn, would dress in costumes on occasion, but they began doing so in earnest after moving to Ankeny in 2021 and learning their neighbors throw an annual Halloween party — costumes required. Tammy usually comes up with the idea, and Shawn is a good sport and plays along. ...
