Good morning to you!

We lost the remote control to our TV recently. More specifically, one of the remotes. They are tough to keep track of. One for the TV itself. One for the soundbar. One for streaming. My wife thinks they are interchangeable. They are not. But, she keeps pushing all the buttons repeatedly, just to be sure.

One of these three remotes — the soundbar one — is playing a serious game of hide and seek. Now, let’s be honest. This thing can’t be that far away. It is certainly in the house. And, more than likely, in the family room.

I did the obvious searches. The couch cushions. Under the recliner. In the end table drawer. Tucked away in a blanket. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. I could have manually made a few thousand volume adjustments during the time I have spent looking for this conspicuous remote control.

We did find a remote for a DVD player we no longer use. And one for the last TV we had. Some loose coins. Several hair ties. A few pieces of popcorn. But, no sound bar remote.

In all this searching, I began to wonder how many remote controls the average American household now has. I couldn’t find exact data, but one site estimated between two and five, which, to me, means three or four. So, once again, I am average. And, once again, I am searching for a remote control. It is maddening.

I used to laugh at the giant remote controls that look like a bread board, wondering why anyone would want something like that. I am beginning to understand.

I thought about buying one of those Apple Tags to attach to the remote, but that would just tell me the remote is in the house, which I am already assuming to be true. And, I would need to have three or more of them.

So, I keep searching. In the same places. Expecting a different result. Yes, that is the definition of insanity, and I am nearly there.

To be honest, we don’t watch a lot of TV, but when we do, we prefer to hear the sound. Yes, we could turn off the soundbar and use the TV speaker, but it took me 30 minutes to get that hooked up to begin with, and I don’t want to go back to ground zero. Of course, if I did change the speaker, I would instantly find the misplaced remote.

Have a remote control recovery tip? Send it my way.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Coffee fixes
In September, Starbucks laid off thousands of workers and closed hundreds of stores. That was the second round in less than one year of downsizing under new CEO Brian Niccol. Employees were informed with this e-mail: “We regret to inform you that we no longer have a position available for you at Starbucks. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.” The move was a response to six straight quarters of same store sales declines as people go out to eat and drink less frequently as prices rise. Starbucks also released a new line of protein-infused beverages. (WSJ)

Coffee's price is up 52.38% compared to the same time last year, according to Trading Economics. Prices retreated a bit in the last week after favorable fall-winter rain forecasts in Brazil. Fox Business reported that coffee prices are the most inflationary of all commodities, mostly due to tariffs on Brazil, the U.S.’ top importer of arabica, the preferred bean of coffee houses.

Dutch Brothers, an Arizona coffee chain, announced it is coming to Iowa including a drive thru on East 14th Street in Des Moines.

JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
The Hesitant Traveler’s Travel Guide

By Joe Weeg

“Let’s go to Vienna!” “Let’s go to Sarajevo!” “Let’s go to Belfast!”… says my wife.

And my go-to response? The very first loving words out of my mouth? Are…

“NOOOOOOOOO WAY!”

You see, my wife wants to see the world. I get it. We spent all our working years and kid-raising years never leaving Iowa (except for her stint with the UN in The Hague — which counts for something, doesn’t it?). Now that we are old, she wants to make up for lost time by going to see museums and castles and cafes and vineyards and mountains and oceans and the Eiffel Tower sparkle with lights.

Nope. Not for me. ...

Making memories across America
Fletcher family visits all 50 states.

By Lindsey Giardino

In 2016, Amanda Fletcher’s mother-in-law was given just six months to live after a cancer diagnosis. The life-altering news inspired the family to plan a weeklong trip to Anna Maria Island in Florida to make lasting memories in a beautiful place.

“We wanted to enjoy sunrises and sunsets together and make memories on a beach,” Fletcher says. “We loved our week together and still enjoy looking at the photos we took that week. It was a reminder that life is so short, and we should make as many memories as we can in the time we have.” ...
