Good morning to you!

There it was. Resting in the magazine rack next to Dad’s recliner in our finished basement. We only had it a week, but its cover was already aging. The inside pages were becoming tattered as well, with many pages having their corners folded for easy reference. And, I would circle the items of interest in ink, just to be sure Mom could see them.

Yes, I am referencing the Sears Christmas catalog that was delivered to my childhood home each holiday season. Or, maybe it was the Montgomery Ward catalog. Or the JCPenney catalog. More than likely, it was all three.

I spent hours with these catalogs, perusing each page and dreaming about finding one or more of those amazing toys or games under our Christmas tree. I am guessing many of you did the same.

I was reminded of these Christmas shopping catalogs last week when I saw the Amazon Holiday Kids Gift Book stacked with the mail on our kitchen counter. Smaller in size, yes, but this full-color mini-catalog is still 92 pages with more than 700 of the hottest toys and gifts categorized by price, age and interest. It also has activities and stickers, as well as QR codes that link directly to the purchase options. I thumbed through every page and reminisced of the times I did this as a child.

Amazon has apparently been mailing this Kids Gift Book since 2018. The tech giants says it sends the catalog to “millions” of customers across the U.S. but does not disclose how it determines who to send it to. As someone who spends a lot of money on printing and mailing, I can tell you that this investment by Amazon is astronomical. Presumably, the product manufacturers listed in the guide pay the lion’s share of the costs, but these are some big checks, nonetheless.

So, why would the King Kong of e-commerce spend so much money on printing and mailing to sell holiday products? The answer is quite simple. It works. Parents love it. Kids love it. The toy manufacturers love it. Amazon loves it. Even someone like me — who would much rather shop at a local store than buy from Amazon — loves it.

There is a giant lesson for retailers of all sizes to be learned here. As flashy as the digital and social marketing schemes appear to be, the good, old-fashioned print-and-mail method of advertising continues to work, reminding us all that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Have a magnificent Monday, and, as always, I thank you for reading.

More bad news for the junk food empire
Novo Nordisk trials showed a 16.6% average weight loss in 64 weeks for their soon-to-launch Wegovy GLP-1 pill. Run as One for Taylor offers kindness and fun
Group raises funds for many community causes.

By Rich Wicks | Winterset Living

Most TV viewers are familiar with a successful and long-running show called “The Amazing Race.” In the show, teams compete to race through various mental and physical challenges, with a $1 million prize for the winning team.

A group in Winterset, known as Run as One for Taylor is using that format for their annual event in honor of Taylor Ham-Aleman, who died in 2014 following a car accident. Taylor was 21 years old, and she left behind an infant son, Carter, who is now 12.
