Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“When our son Paul was 5 or 6, he wanted an elephant costume (There is always Elvis, Sept. 24, 2025). My wife (the good artist and seamstress) made one for him with gray felt. The color and the texture sure looked right for elephant skin. A paper towel sleeve worked well as a base for the trunk. Our son sort of helped to cut out the pieces. Fun was had by all. This was before the internet, so no one knew what an elephant sounded like. His grunts sounded as real as anyone imagined that an elephant would make.” - George

I am grunting like an elephant right now. I think. - Shane

“How could you forget ‘Whistle While You Work’ from ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ (Whistle while you work, Sept. 25, 2025)? Google states the single made Top 10 in 1938.” - Rebecca

It wasn’t intentional. In fact, those were the first four words of my column. - Shane

“Shane, I don't think I'll be the first to mention the theme to ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ (Whistle while you work, Sept. 25, 2025). Also, for you old rockers out there, how about ‘Hocus Pocus’ by Focus?” - James

You were not only the first but the only. Doesn’t matter. Aunt Bee would be proud. Nice choice. I had to look up “Hocus Pocus” by Focus, though, and I did not hear a whistle. Lots of what sounded like yodeling, but no whistle. Did I miss something? - Shane

“Good Morning Shane, I should not be so foolish to challenge you but how about the ‘Colonel Bogey March’? Embarrass me by how easily you recall where it is found (Whistle while you work, Sept. 25, 2025).” - John

I found “Colonel Bogey March.” I listened to it. I learned that it was the theme song of the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai.” And now I am whistling along. I salute you, John. - Shane

“I am grateful for your expressing both simple and complex life to us (Easy peasy, Sept. 29, 2025). Reminds me I am not alone in some of life's experiences. I suggest you learn how to use the speech-to-text feature on your computer.” - John

I keep trying that feature, but going back and editing seems to create a lot of extra work. Meanwhile, I am getting quite good at the hunt and peck method. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

The skinny on chickens, from Julia Child and Mark Schatzker

"Chickens have no flavor. They taste more like teddy bear stuffing than like chickens before World War II. That is why one has to use so many seasonings." (JC)

"Chickens are the best example of how food systems have made food more bland and less flavorful." (MK)

"If your meat lacks flavor it’s probably because what it was fed had no flavor." (MK)

"Free ranged chickens have much longer shelf lives because of the grasshoppers they eat." (MK)

"Label Rouge are the best tasting chickens in the world." (MK) Label Rouge is a French designation for chickens raised in the Sarthe, Landes and Gascogne regions. They must be raised outdoors, be at least 81 days old at slaughter (most U.S. chickens are killed at 42-49 days) and eat a particular diet. More than $1 billion of Label Rouge chickens are eaten each year in France. In America, the sixth generation Amish farm La Belle Patrimoine produces chickens to the same standards. They are sold at Whole Foods stores.

FILM REVIEW
Terrifying non-horror movies to give you waking nightmares all October long

By David Rowley

“Not a speck of light is showing / So the danger must be growing / Are the fires of Hell a-glowing? / Is the grisly reaper mowing?” (Lyrics from “The Wonderous Book Ride”)
Think the horror genre has a monopoly on fear? Oh, dear reader, how wrong you are. Prepare to have your pulse racing with these non-horror horror movie masterpieces. Far from the typical terrifying fare, each film is a genre-defying tale into the heart of dread. The following eight movies demonstrate, with unnerving precision, that what goes bump in the night is not confined to shadowy corners of haunted houses. ...

Setting students on library adventures

By T.K. West

Born in the Midwest, Carrie Foell spent much of her childhood moving between Kansas City and Chicago for her father’s work. Her family eventually settled in West Des Moines when she was in sixth grade. After graduating from Valley High School, Foell earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa and began her career in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she taught for five years.

In 2005, Foell returned to West Des Moines where she taught at Van Meter while pursuing a master’s degree in library science from UNI. As she was completing her thesis, a teacher librarian position opened in the Waukee Community School District, and she eagerly applied. Foell has now been a teacher librarian at Brookview Elementary School for the past 14 years. ...
