Good morning to you!

Few things in life bring back memories like the family room or living room of our childhood homes. Maybe it was the shag carpet. Or the wood paneling. Or the flowered sofa. Or, of course, the console TV. Many of us spent a great deal of time in that room, so it makes sense why it sticks in our minds.

Times change, which means styles, needs and technology all change, too. Furniture doesn’t seem to last as long as it used to. TVs are replaced rather than repaired. And new carpet simply needs installed every now and then. Meanwhile, as much as we remember our own living rooms, we equally remember the ones from our favorite TV shows.

I can still see the Cunninghams gathering together in the “Happy Days” living room, where Howard sometimes got frisky with Marion. And there are Lenny and Squiggy barging in to Laverne and Shirley’s living room in their Milwaukee apartment, much like Kramer did in Jerry’s place in New York City for “Seinfeld.”

The late 1970s California vibe was quite present in “Three’s Company,” as was the elder version of it in “The Ropers.” Anyone else miss Norman Fell? And Don Knotts?

Fred and Lamont didn't have anything special in their junk dealer living room, but it was the center of the “Sanford and Son” TV show — and where the ripple was kept.

We all knew where Archie sat in “All in the Family,” and we knew what would happen if the Meathead took his chair. Where else would we have learned what order to put our socks and shoes on?

I didn’t watch “Roseanne” often, but I can still visualize the Conners’ living room, as it looked like many of the ones from my childhood with those crocheted Afghan blankets.

Most of didn’t grow up with a father who was an architect, but the Bradys did, and their house in “The Brady Bunch” was unforgettable. Those iconic stairs stepped into the family room, where Mike and Carol taught many life lessons to the Brady kids — and many of us.

As television sets changed from black and white to color, many of our favorite shows did, too. I only recall “Bewitched” from reruns, but the color versions showed the popular oranges and greens and browns that Samantha and Darrin Stephens decorated their late 1960s home with.

How about you? What iconic living rooms do you recall from your favorite TV shows? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Tuesday touts
Sablefish, in our opinion, has the most melt-in-the mouth, buttery texture of all things that swim for a living. For most of my life, I only found it in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and Monterrey Park, where rich Asians pay top dollar for it. Now it pops up in Des Moines at Proudfoot & Bird, Oak Park, Waterfront and Harbinger on occasions. Last week it was the Wednesday special at Waterfront. I arrived at 5 p.m., and, by 5:45 p.m., my waitress was lamenting that it was so popular there might be none leftover for staff dinners. By 6:15 p.m., the market section of the store told me they could not sell me any because the kitchen had commandeered their supply. I think it's catching on in Des Moines.

Umbrella's wonder bargain of the week - Fareway's Wednesday only rotisserie chickens cost $5. You can not buy a raw chicken that cheaply. Yes, we know Sam's Club and Costco offer $5 chickens but those are dues-paying clubs and not as ubiquitous in Iowa as Fareway.

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
When the movie cameras were rolling in Iowa

By Kristian Day

One of the bills that passed in this year’s legislative session was Iowa Bill SF657, the Economic Development Bill that includes tax credits and incentives. One of the programs that finally made it through during the DOGE era was a new Iowa Film Tax Incentive program. I never thought I would see the day.

I moved back to Iowa in 2007 while the original tax incentive was being put in place. For a short while in the late 2000s, Iowa looked like it was about to become a star in its own right. The dream was simple enough: Create a tax incentive program that would make Hollywood look twice at our towns, our skylines (or lack thereof) and our cornfields. By 2007, with the passage of House File 411, the Iowa Film Office suddenly had the tools to lure two or three major features a year. It wasn’t difficult to imagine boom mics dangling over Winterset’s square or a caravan of production trucks pulling into Newton. ...

Meet Ryan Blankenship
Building relationships through computer science

By Rachel Harrington

Ryan Blankenship is in his 13th year of teaching at Shuler Elementary School — the first and only school in which he has ever worked. He taught kindergarten for three years, third grade for seven years, and now teaches computer science.

“I wanted to be a teacher my whole life,” he says. “I had two brothers six and ten years younger than me. I’d always ‘play school’ with them. In high school, I mentored students younger than me.”

After high school, Blankenship attended the University of Northern Iowa, then he headed to Shuler Elementary to work as a special education associate for a year. While teaching kindergarten and third grade, he enjoyed every technology opportunity with his students that came his way. When the position opened last year for a computer science teacher, he applied for it and landed the job. ...
