Good morning to you!

On the first day of wrestling practice my freshman year in college, our coach addressed the team with a simple comment: “When you were in high school, each one of you were the best wrestler on your team. You no longer are. Get over it.”

Those were cold, but true, comments. He went on to explain why this was not only a good thing but a great thing. We would only get better as a team, and as individual wrestlers, he said, by surrounding ourselves with great athletes. He then challenged us to take full advantage of the talent that was in that wrestling room and to seek improvement every day.

It was a good message about wrestling and about life. I was reminded of this recently when I read a quote from author John Maxwell that said, “You’re only as good as the people you have around you.”

I noticed this to be true when I played a lot of tennis. I was not a formally trained player, and I didn't compete on any high school or college teams, but I played a lot, and I learned by doing. I played awful tennis players, and I played great tennis players, and I played many in between. What I learned was that my level of play went up or down based on the skills of the person I was playing against. In other words, I played my best games against the best players. As such, I wanted to play quality opponents as often as I could. I certainly wanted to win, but I knew that, even in losing, I was getting better.

I think about this most every day in my job and in my personal life. What am I doing today to get better? And am I surrounding myself with people who can help me do that?

It’s a good reminder, at least for me, that even though I may not be the most talented person in the room, I can always improve.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Tuesday touts

Our initial "super bargain." On request of more than two readers, we are going to name one of our regular "Deals today" citations into this space as a "super bargain." Our initial entry is from Mickey's Irish Pub in Waukee. Every Tuesday, one can buy a half-pound cheeseburger with two toppings and a side dish for $7. Try doing that at home. My most recent burger purchase was $14 a pound at Gateway. Even Fareway's "own special grind" is $7.25/pound now.

"The Dorito Effect: The Surprising New Truth About Food and Flavor" by Mark Schatzker is on a level with "Fast Food Nation" and "You Are What you Eat" as a wake-up call about America's sorry food system. It tells the story about what happened to food when artificial flavorings became incredibly good while foods were being raised in ways that removed most flavor from natural things. Chicken flavored crackers and supermarket chicken became equals, and that wasn't good for our health.

FEATURE STORY
Fall Arts & Entertainment Guide

By Cyote Williams

The leaves are changing, the days are getting shorter, and the weather is cooling off. What does not change is the array of things to do around central Iowa. From September to December, the metro area has countless activities for those of all ages.

Art galleries continue to display the best works from world-famous artists to those who make their art right here in the Hawkeye state and in Des Moines. The same goes for theatrical and musical performances. The wide range of theaters gives Iowans the chance to check out which local talents are showing their stuff, while also being able to see who is topping the charts. Our local sports teams do the same, with several high-level collegiate programs close by, as well as the ever-present Wild, Wolves and Buccaneers, ready to skate, shoot and entertain.

If that is not enough, we gathered a list of events from comedians, community festivals, pumpkin smashings, and even holiday celebrations to fill your schedules with.  ...

Hudson family hosts ambassador of Thailand.

By Darren Tromblay

When Ankeny’s Suthiphon “Sue” Hudson was approached about the possibility of facilitating a visit from an important foreign dignitary earlier this year, she jumped at the opportunity.

Hudson, her husband, Matt, and their children, Jasmine, Lake and Jayden, soon found themselves in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, Ambassador of Thailand to the United States, on his trip to Iowa. Naturally, they were excited.

“This would be his first official trip to our state,” Hudson, the president of the Thai Association of Iowa, says. “It was an incredible honor — and a rare opportunity — to host someone of his stature and to represent both countries I love and call home.”  ...
