Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Spinning back longer than I care to remember, growing up on the farm meant summertime jobs — baling hay, shelling corn, etc. When dinnertime (that's 12 noon for city folks) came, the crew headed to the outdoors pump to rehydrate (The cups we choose, Sept. 2, 2025). That was done by shaking the spider out of the tin cup hanging next to it and not giving a whit about any added tastes such as the cup or natural impurities in the well water. It was cold, and it tasted great.” - John

Sometimes, I wonder if we would all be better off if we were exposed to germs more often. - Shane

“Styrofoam cups for coffee are staples at church dinners and AA meetings (The cups we choose, Sept. 2, 2025). They are not just horrible; they are dangerous leachers of chemicals and break and spill when gripped too tightly, which alcoholics do a lot.” - Billy

Great points. And Styrofoam makes that annoying squeak sound, too. - Shane

“Shane, you are dead on (Working hard, Sept. 1, 2025). Working hard, and balancing it with a rewarding life outside of work, is one of the keys to remaining healthy in many ways. I see far too many newly retired folks get bored and fall into bad health after getting to that long-awaited retirement date. Many retirees, however, find fulfillment in new ‘work’ by volunteering or working fewer hours at something to remain active and around others. We should never forget that work is biblical, and, by the way, I'm still looking in the scriptures where it says a man ought to retire.” - Brad

Wait a minute. Are you saying Jesus didn’t golf? - Shane

“I often feel like Stretch Armstrong in the commercial when they show four kids all pulling on each arm or leg in separate directions (Distractions, Sept. 8, 2025). But, like the toy, I snap back into shape, too.” - Patty

I agree, except I feel more like Stretch Monster. - Shane

“I loved the puzzle reference in your column (A big jigsaw puzzle, Sept. 9, 2025). Yes, we all need that guide in life, too. Anyone who has tried to put together a large puzzle without the box cover knows. I appreciate how you can take those simple things we can all relate to and put them in perspective.” - Shirley

I had a friend who used to enjoy mixing puzzle pieces up from various boxes and then give them to others. I guess life is like that sometimes, too. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Tallgrass Theatre’s Noël Coward comedy opens Friday
"Blithe Spirit," as described by its director, Bob Baskerville, “…is an improbable farce in three acts. Our goal is to take our audiences back in time to the late 1930s. A time before we were overwhelmed with the constant barrage of electronics, sound bites and social media. A simpler time when conversations were more than simply exchanging information; they were entertaining in and of themselves. One of the hallmarks of Coward's writing is his ability to make the English language fluid and lyrical.” Sept. 12-28.

Is Champagne losing its fizz? High income shoppers spent 1.8% more shopping in the last year while other income groups spent about the same, according to Bank of America. Walmart responded by adding high-end brands like BOSE and Apple and high end products like saunas. Lady Dior pushed too far, raising the price of its medium hand bag by 81% to $6,700. Bubbly was an outlier – Prosecco sales soared last year as Champagne’s dropped. (Fox Business)

Are American corn and soybeans losing their status? America’s share of global corn exports dropped to 33% in 2024 from 59% in 2004. In recent years, Brazil overtook the U.S. in both corn and soybean exports due to lingering effects from tariffs of the first Trump Administration and Brazil's "all-in" move to plant corn and beans in the Amazon's "lungs of planet Earth."

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
When the movie cameras were rolling in Iowa

By Kristian Day

One of the bills that passed in this year’s legislative session was Iowa Bill SF657, the Economic Development Bill that includes tax credits and incentives. One of the programs that finally made it through during the DOGE era was a new Iowa Film Tax Incentive program. I never thought I would see the day.

I moved back to Iowa in 2007 while the original tax incentive was being put in place. For a short while in the late 2000s, Iowa looked like it was about to become a star in its own right. The dream was simple enough: Create a tax incentive program that would make Hollywood look twice at our towns, our skylines (or lack thereof) and our cornfields. By 2007, with the passage of House File 411, the Iowa Film Office suddenly had the tools to lure two or three major features a year. It wasn’t difficult to imagine boom mics dangling over Winterset’s square or a caravan of production trucks pulling into Newton. ...

A lucky move to Johnston
Doyle appreciates her new community.

By Lindsey Giardino

It was Friday the 13th when Karen Doyle and her blended family moved to Johnston — something they consider lucky.

They had been exploring areas around Johnston, Grimes and Urbandale and ultimately settled on Ridgedale Heights just north of Johnston High School.

“This location offered a view of the prairie between the school and our house, along with proximity to numerous amenities,” Doyle explains. ...
