Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning, Shane. As with you, in my younger days, I was drawn to the absurdity of the tabloids (Woman Killed By Fur Coat, Aug. 27, 2025). I knew that what was included in those rags was outlandish, but I was ready to laugh along with most of the rest of the world. There was even a trendy musical based on this non-news: ‘Six Women with Brain Death, or Expiring Minds Want to Know,’ described as a wild and very left-of-center view of the world from an entirely feminine standpoint. The Playhouse produced it back when they were presenting edgier theatre fare in their basement studio theatre. I am grateful that you continue to demonstrate what all true news media need to demonstrate: accountability and integrity. Thank you.” - John

Thank you, John. But when the bat boy is found here, we will cover it. - Shane

“My grandpa always told me, ‘No one ever drowned in sweat’ (Working hard or hardly working, Sept. 1, 2025). He managed the phone company in Osceola in the 1950s to early 1960s. He was first one in the office and the last one out. He started in the phone business in the 1920s installing poles and running wire.” - Johnny

I now have a new quote for my arsenal, thanks to you and your grandpa! - Shane

“Porcelain at home but none of hundreds of porcelain coffee cups I have owned ever fit the drink holders in my car (The cups we choose, Sept. 2, 2025). So, Yeti is always my mobile choice.” - Jim

Unfortunately, you are right. Maybe we should manufacture porcelain cups that fit in auto cupholders? - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. I have one of those new state-of-the-art cups that I only use on Sunday mornings to take a cup of coffee or an ice water to church (The cups we choose, Sept. 2, 2025). My palate is not as sophisticated as yours. I was so abused by fast food coffee and cigarettes that when I quit smoking I found out how disgusting a coffee served at a late night burger place really tasted. This cup works just fine for sips during the service. I have to remind you of those little hard plastic holders that would be occupied by replaceable white plastic cups designed so they only held enough hot beverage a few minutes. Putting creamer in the coffee expedited the loss of temperature. Your porcelain cups are much more stable, too.” - John

Oh, yes. I forgot about those silly plastic cups. And they were small, too, right? Who drinks 4 ounces of coffee? - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Washington Post is suggesting that the U.S. Open (tennis) has a cocktail that is ready to join Kentucky Derby’s mint julep and Wimbledon’s Pimm’s cups in a holy trinity of sports drinks. The Open's honey deuce is a mixture of vodka, lemonade and a bit of raspberry liqueur floated on top with a garnish of honeydew balls on a skewer.  According to Grey Goose, a sponsor of the Open and the company whose vodka is used in the drink, some 556,782 were served at the tournament last year.
The U.S. Open finals and the Iowa vs Iowa State football game both happen this weekend. From our place under the "Crusoe Umbrella," we propose that the official drink of the local game should be a boilermaker preferably of a Big Grove beer spiked with a shot of Cedar Ridge whiskey. Those are Iowa’s number one brewery and distillery products. Of course, we would substitute another Iowa beer or booze if they would sponsor the game and drink. We doubt the universities would want that though.

FEATURE STORY
Traveling Highway 44

By Joe Weeg

I pull off Highway 44 on a chance, turn off the car on a whim, step into a farmyard of swarming chickens with trepidation, and listen to an old man weave his stories.

“Meryl Streep rode that bicycle right there.”

The weathered, sober-looking man, straight out of a Grant Wood painting, points into the distant dark corner.

I look around the massive pole barn — past the buckets and tins and tools and lamps and trunks and tractors and ladders and sleds and tires and even past the obliging owner, Jimmy Boll. Where is that bike? And is that rooster that followed us into the barn going to attack me? ...

Rose has taught all four years at Brookview Elementary and is looking forward to another great school year.

“Post gradation, I knew I wanted to go back at my high school alma matter as I had the best experience. I loved all of my teachers from Waukee Elementary, Waukee North Middle School, Prarieview and Waukee High School.
