Back to the Biz Husker Hawkeye wars go to the vats. As reported here last week, Big Grove has been repelled in efforts to open its $5.5 million and counting new pub in Omaha by Nebraska Liquor Control Commission who told the Omaha City Council that BG was denied because it was from Iowa and produced more beer than any Nebraska brewer. Then they told the media and public that had nothing to do with it. Since then, we have learned who is behind the fight to beat back the Iowans: Associated Beverage Distributors of Nebraska has petitioned against BG since their initial application. Raygun should have a lot of fun with this squabble now that it has stores in Omaha and Lincoln. (KETV Omaha)
Beyond the upper Missouri River Valley, beer has bigger problems. Business Insider forecasts that hemp-derived THC beverages will hit $756 million in annual sales by 2029. That’s 33% growth, but still a far cry from the U.S. beer market, which is currently valued at $117 billion and not without its own threats — mainly that Gen Z (19-29) is drinking, dating and going out to eat less often than previous generations and Ozempic and its ilk turn alcohol into a turnoff for all ages. Fox Business reported that U.S. alcohol consumption hit its lowest mark in the 70-year history of tracking the percentage of adults who drink two or more times a week.
