Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“But, are there cheer squads to support the competitive cheer squads (No soccer cheerleaders?, Aug. 20, 2025)?” - Brad

If there were, and if they were televised, I could watch them in picture in picture. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. As college students, we watched ‘Looney Tunes,’ hoping for Wile E. Coyote and the Wacky Races. My favorite episode was ‘Fast Track to Hackensack.’ I tend to stick with news programs now.” - John

I love it! Of course, much like Wile E. Coyote, Dick Dastardly couldn’t win. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. My favorite cartoon line is from Bugs Bunny. When Bugs offers Pete the Puma a cup of tea, he asks, ‘How many lumps do you want?’ I think of it every morning when I bring my husband his coffee!” - Lee

And here’s a cigar for you! – Shane

“Loved the photo column today, even if your math is a bit off (The development of photos, Aug. 26, 2025). 61 per second. 3,660 per minute. 219,600 per hour. 5,270,400 per day.” - Mike

Well, figures lie and liars figure. - Shane

“I can relate to old photos and film (The development of photos, Aug. 26, 2025). Most of our family photos were either quick shots and never good. Waited months to finish the roll of film before we got it developed. My parents were fans of slides, so no hard copies. As times changed, I remember my husband and I going to get passport photos (1995 or so). Photographer said they could do digital and print them off. Sounded great. U.S. passport accepted them; thought we were golden. After a few years, we noticed that our passport photos were fading away. Customs once said, ‘I think I can see it’. We ended up having to replace our passports with new photos years before they expired.” - Sharon

Maybe the digital era of photography hasn’t “developed” as much as we think it has. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Pet food
Human diets in America continue to be among the world's least heathy as demonstrated by media drooling over state fair junk foods. But our pets are embracing healthier diets faster than humans. Elanco CEO Jeff Simmons credited healthier foods for their recent animal food successes. Credelio Quatro was an instant success with the U.S. dog population growing 17% since 2016 and the cat population growing 27% in the same time. He said success comes down “to the two P’s – protein and pets” but adds livestock owners are also buying into healthier diets.

The Farmer's Dog has been advertising that their dog food is "minimally processed."

Camping in style
Residents share the joy of traveling with the conveniences.

By Rachel Harrington

Those who prefer to make the trip with a camper share why they like to have some of the conveniences of home — bed, bathroom, air conditioner and more — on the trip with them.

Family fun
For Liza Shoning-Young, enjoying the outdoors via camping has been an evolving experience. Before she and her husband had children, they used to tent camp. Once they had children, they decided to switch gears and bought a 1975 Scamper pop-up.

“It was a neat pop-up,” she says. “The guy who owned it before us was a pilot and kept it in a Morton building. He took it to air shows." ...

1949: Soviets explode atomic bomb. At a remote test site at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan, the USSR successfully detonates its first atomic bomb, code name “First Lightning.” In order to measure the effects of the blast, the Soviet scientists constructed buildings, bridges, and other civilian structures in the vicinity of the bomb. They also placed animals in cages nearby so that they could test the effects of nuclear radiation on human-like mammals.
