Good morning to you!

The year was 1977 and, for my brother Steve and me, Christmas toys were forever changed. That was the year Mom introduced us to Pong. Or maybe it was Santa who did. I can’t recall. What I do know, though, is that we spent countless hours playing this most basic of video games on a 9-inch black-and-white TV in our basement, and we truly thought this was high-tech. For the time, it was.

For those of you who don’t know, Pong was a video game that simulated table tennis, but only in two dimensions — a far cry from the video games that are available today. Playing it on a black-and-white TV was fine because the game was only available in black and white. Players would use paddles (that were built into the console)

by moving them up and down on the screen. We were able to compete against each other, too, as a second paddle was on the opposing side of the console. No remotes on this set, though, wireless or otherwise.

Pong was manufactured by Atari and originally released in 1972. It was the first commercially successful video game and, along with the Magnavox Odyssey, established the industry. Soon after its release, several companies produced games that copied it, but these machines were not the home units my brother and I enjoyed.

In 1974, Atari proposed a home version of Pong that connected to a TV. The first units were branded by Sears with the “Tele-Games” name and sold in late 1975 for $98.95 and an additional $7.95 for the AC adapter. That was a lot of money at the time. Still is. Atari later released a version under its own brand in 1976. Who needs Sears?

Our version was a knock-off brand — the Coleco Telstar Pong. It was commercially successful, too, as about one million units were sold at a price of $50 from 1976 to 1978. The short-lived success of Pong led Coleco to nearly go bankrupt in 1980. Regardless, for those few years, Steve and I mastered those paddles and ball, which were really just straight lines and a dot. Regardless, we thought we were the real deal, playing tennis, hockey, handball and jai alai. The 2.5-pound plastic console had variable settings for beginner, intermediate and pro skill levels. Needless to say, we were pros.

Mom even got in on the fun and joined us for some friendly competition. Her hand-eye coordination didn’t match the skill level needed, though, and she retired from play quickly. I would guess our Coleco Telstar Pong sold at a garage sale at some point soon after, probably along with the 9-inch black-and-white TV. But for those few years, they both provided much fun and enjoyment for a couple of boys.

How about you? What were the toys of your youth that bring back great memories? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

IOWA ARTIST
Faces in the Crowd

By Jackie Wilson

When Adam Oestreich “stumbled on” an art exhibit of William Hawkins at Figge Art Museum in Davenport, he says the experience was life-changing to his career.

He became enchanted with the works of Hawkins, a self-taught artist.

“The colors were vibrant, powerful and incredible. It blew me away. I discovered artists can be powerful and have beautiful work — even if they didn’t have a chance to pursue art,” he says.

Landmarks add to the community’s character.

By Rachel Harrington

A landmark Norwalk will “Never Forget”
In 2018, the Firefighters Association in Norwalk applied to a program out of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and a request was put in to obtain a piece of steel from the Twin Towers.

“The steel was available, by request, to any emergency services organizations,” Fire Chief Jenn Porter says. “The organization likes to know what you’ll be doing with it, and in our case, we were creating both a firefighters memorial and a 9/11 memorial.”

The process took approximately a year from start to finish. The association had kicked around several ideas at first, thinking perhaps they could put it up themselves.
