How do you roll? Or, maybe more accurately, unroll?
The age-old debate on the proper orientation for the toilet paper roll continues to baffle me. As a younger man, I never noticed, and, quite frankly, I didn’t care. My only concern was that there was enough toilet paper on the roll.
Meanwhile, this is a real debate with arguments for the “over” or “under” based on aesthetics, hospitality, ease of access and cleanliness. And then there are the topics of paper conservation, ease of detaching sheets, and compatibility with pets.
Who knew this was such an issue? The answer is, apparently, people like me. I recently found myself so irritated by a roll in the “over” position rather than the “under” position that I changed it — and it wasn’t even in my house.
Before you label me as too forward with this switcheroo, you should know the incident was not in the bathroom of someone else’s home. It was at our office, where I pay the lease and, as such, I believe I have the right to say which way the toilet rolls go.
I was surprised to learn that my preferred choice of “under” puts me in the minority, as approximately 70% of people prefer the “over” position.
In a survey of 1,000 Americans by Cottonelle, the results showed roughly 50% of the population say they pay active attention to toilet paper orientation, and 20% say they get agitated if the toilet paper is oriented the “wrong” way. About 19% of people even admitted to changing the orientation of toilet paper in someone else’s house.
So, is this a male/female debate, much like the toilet lid being up or down? Apparently not, according to studies. However, Cottonelle found that men do rate higher for agitation if the orientation doesn’t match their preference.
Maybe how we mount our toilet paper rolls says something about our personality. Dr. Gilda Carle, a consultant for Cottonelle, claims people who utilize the “over” technique are more likely to have a dominant personality type. And if you hang “under,” you’re more likely to have an easy-going nature.
I am glad we have that settled. Which do you prefer, and why? Send me a note and let me know.
Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Pick up your October CITYVIEW magazine, available on racks across the metro. | | COLLECTIONS & HOBBIES Halloween and Christmas displays turn heads at Beaverdale home
By Cyote Williams
Halloween is a time for trick-or-treaters, fun costumes, scary movies and, perhaps, a trip to a haunted house or two. For David Ladd, it is a time to let his imagination run wild in preparation for decorating his home for all to see.
Halloween and Christmas provide homeowners the opportunity to transform their lawns into something special for passersby to appreciate, and few take advantage of the opportunity better than Ladd. His inspiration to start the yearly tradition came from his childhood.
“I grew up in a house that was always decorated. My parents always decorated inside. My folks live on a corner lot as well, and my dad does not get out-decorated in his neighborhood. So, I’ve always been drawn to it. And then when the kids were young, it made it fun for them — and it’s fun for me,” Ladd said. | | READ MORE |

Woebegone Wednesday
Death of the un-Spiced. Coca-Cola has killed off its "Spiced" line just months after promoting it as a “permanent flavor.” The company gave no explanation for the execution but Wall Street Journal speculated that “a lack of awareness of the new offering and confusion about the flavor (because it wasn’t actually spicy) probably contributed to lackluster sales.”
Deli death spiral. "After 5 years of good times and wonderful memories, The Nosh Café has closed." That's how the East Village cafe announced its demise last month. It was the second cafe named The Nosh to close in the metro and the second Jewish cafe to close this summer after Little Brother. Grund's and The Pickle Barrel also closed down in Des Moines the last 50 years. Maccabee's Glatt Deli is our only surviving member of one of America's greatest restaurant traditions. Even in New York City, where the Jewish deli was born in the 19th century, the number has dwindled from 1,500 in the 1930s, to fewer than 30. They reached museum status this year when "I'll Have What She's Having" served the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie. Inquiries as to why they are disappearing usually find three reasons — the popularity of the Subway (build it your way) concept; the avoidance of fats like brisket in favor of non kosher, but leaner meats like hind cuts; and barbecue's rise in popularity which made briskets expensive. Arby's alone buys over 10% of all brisket in America.

Featured in the current issue of Adel Living magazine | | The race is on Residents share their passion for reaching the winner’s circle.
By Darren Tromblay
When driving through Iowa’s wide open spaces, who hasn’t wondered what it would be like to put the pedal to the metal and see just how fast they can go? Who hasn’t, in the congested traffic of the metro rush hour, thought about stepping on it, weaving through the traffic, and roaring over an imagined finish line? For most of us, such thoughts remain a daydream. Others, however, make pursuit of the winner’s circle part of their lives. They commit the time and money it takes to hit the racing circuit. And many will say that the thrill of the race has them hooked.
From go-kart to sprint car Kelby Watt seems to have been born with his foot on the accelerator — and the accelerator pushed to the floor.
The 23-year-old Adel native began his racing career at the tender age of 4 at English Creek Speedway in Melcher. His family hadn’t been involved much in racing up to that point, but little did they know, they soon would be. | | READ MORE |
