Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“You forgot Johnny Rivers’ ‘Memphis, Tennessee.’ (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024)” - John

Yes, I did, but not on purpose. And that song should definitely be included. - Shane

“I agree with you wholeheartedly that people need to be responsible for their incurred debts (Pay it back, Oct. 7, 2024). I have always felt that interest rates being lowered on student loans that were made at extremely high rates would be a better solution to the student loan problem. Regarding the athletes, I certainly agree with you but would go one step further and suggest that in the days of NIL there is no reason for them to receive scholarships. Rather, they should pay tuition with their earnings from NIL. I'm not really sure either way how I feel about scholarships for uncompleted degrees, but it does give me food for thought.” - Dianne

Having exceptions would make this tricky to enforce. To keep it simple, if you receive a scholarship at a tax-funded state university and you don’t earn a degree, you pay it back. Of course, if you were not given a scholarship, then you have nothing to pay back. - Shane

“I like how you think, Shane (Pay it back, Oct. 7, 2024).” - Joni

Thank you, Joni. It’s a little thing called self-responsibility, and this world could use more of it. - Shane

“Would your scholarship payback plan apply to all scholarships, or just athletic ones (Pay it back, Oct. 7, 2024)? Just curious.” - Kirk

It would seem to me that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. If you accept a monetary scholarship at a tax-funded college or university for any reason and don’t earn a degree at that institution, you pay it back. - Shane

“How about scholarships at private colleges (Pay it back, Oct. 7, 2024)? Should those students be required to pay it back if they don’t earn a degree there? - Debbie

The difference, to me, is in whether tax dollars fund the scholarship or not. I believe private schools should have that same policy, but requiring them all to do so may not make sense. Realistically, I don’t see this happening anywhere, but it makes for good conversation. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
Linn’s Haunted House marks 40 years of scares

By Kristian Day

Haunted house season is here. I remember being a kid and going to some questionable attractions when I lived in the Quad Cities. There was an old water and power company building near the bridge and dam that connected Rock Island and Milan on the Illinois side. It was the 1990s, so it was kind of a hybrid of chainsaw maniacs and scantily clad vampire gals emerging from coffins — a little early for the technological advances that would arrive 15 years later. There was also the lack of a safety code upheld by the local authority. (This also could have just been the Rock Island local authority, but who knows?)

Jaycee’s Haunted House started in the late 1970s and went strong until it finally closed in 2009. Ian Miller, who co-owns legendary Slaughterhouse in downtown Des Moines, grew up going to haunts in the 1980s. They obviously had a big influence on him, as he would later make a full-time career in the business of scaring patrons.

News to dye for:

Cheetos dye can turn the skin of live mice transparent to reveal the animal’s organs inside. "When scientists massaged a solution of the dye tartrazine onto the bellies of live mice, their skin appeared to vanish, revealing the inner organs and pulsing muscles in the gut. After soaking the mice’s heads in the solution, they saw blood vessels that sluice the brain." (WSJ)

• California will prohibit blue dye No. 1, blue dye No. 2, green dye No. 3, yellow dye No. 5, yellow dye No. 6 and red dye No. 40 from being served in food provided by California public schools after the additives were linked to hyperactivity and other behavioral issues. (CBS)

New again
Residents share their home renovation experiences.

By Jackie Wilson

For many homeowners, the day comes, sooner or later, when they look around their abode and wonder when the carpet was ever stylish, the wall color ever stunning and the layout ever functional. They realize new curtains, throw pillows and artwork won’t be enough to freshen things up, and the only solution to the weary look of their home is to bite the bullet and invest in some major improvements. And, when the work is done, their home — and enthusiasm for it — feels new.

Unfinished basement
When Jess and Jon Severson moved into their Waukee home in 2022, the new home offered an unfinished basement. The builder had only one basement option, which they declined.

“We thought we’d hold off on the basement and save for something we really wanted,” Jon recalls.

The basement served as a place for storage until the couple finally contacted Cody Bailey Construction. Neighbors had some work done by Bailey.
